Google could soon start selling audiobooks on Play Store
A banner has appeared on Google Play for several users stating that audiobooks are now available on Google Play.
Google could be planning to mark a significant entry into audiobooks market if reports are true. The search giant might soon start selling such products on its Play Store. News portal 9to5google has now reported that a banner appeared on Google Play for several users stating that audiobooks were now available on Google Play.
However, "at the time of publishing, that link doesn's work and simply 404's, but it seems to be appearing for all users both on the web and within the Google Play app on Android," the report said. So basically the page is not accessible right now. Interestingly, to celebrate the launch, Google's banner had also mentioned a deal where 50 percent off would be provided on the first audiobook that a user would purchase.
But again, it seems that the company is working on building its platform. Speculations suggest that the tech giant could soon push audiobooks live in the store.
Meanwhile, previous reports that appeared in the month of November from Android Police stated that they had found references to Audiobooks in an APK teardown of the Google Play app. Similarly, The Android Soul just recently had also reported that in their APK teardown of the latest update to the Google Play Books app, and they had found a code for several new features, including audiobooks.
As per the findings, the codes basically pointed to audiobooks in the Play Store and to Google Cast functionality.
We don't know what Google is actually planning or when the audiobooks would available on the platform but if the new feature is added to Google Play Store then the search giant could possibly have a huge impact on the audiobook market. More significantly, it would go up against Amazon and its domination of the market.
Besides, sales of audiobooks seem to have gone up in recent years, and Google having its own dedicated storefront will give it some ground to capture if not all but some portion of sales. Google could benefit from such feature within its digital ecosystem.
In any case, Google is yet to make announcements regarding the same and when it does we will update you with proper details.
