Google I/O 2025: Google Partners with Samsung and Qualcomm for AI-Powered Android XR Smart Glasses
Google has announced new collaborations with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop smart glasses using the Android XR platform. This move is seen as a direct challenge to Meta's Ray-Ban Meta glasses. The announcement was made at Google I/O 2025, highlighting Google's ambition to create various versions of glasses and headsets with different partners.
In 2023, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google revealed a mixed reality initiative. Following this, Samsung introduced a headset named Project Moohan in late 2024. Google stated that this headset is expected to launch later this year. The collaboration aims to enhance both software and hardware reference platforms for developers.

Expanding Partnerships for XR Glasses
Google also disclosed plans to broaden its collaboration with Samsung to include XR glasses. Both companies are working on developing a comprehensive platform for developers to create innovative solutions. This partnership signifies a significant step in advancing the capabilities of XR technology.
At the event, Google showcased concept glasses powered by its Gemini AI on the Android XR platform. These glasses feature a camera, microphone, and speakers similar to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses but include an optional display for notifications attached to the lens. This display allows users to access information seamlessly.
Innovative Features and Testing
The concept glasses demonstrated various applications such as messaging, navigation guidance, scheduling appointments, live language translations, and photography. Google is distributing these units to selected testers to gather valuable feedback on their functionality and user experience.
The Android XR platform was initially launched last year in collaboration with Qualcomm and Samsung. Although specific devices were not discussed at that time, the recent announcement indicates Google's commitment to developing multiple iterations of smart eyewear with diverse partners.
