Meta Quest Could Get Vision Pro-Like Freeform Window Placement
Meta is experimenting with a feature for its Quest headsets that enables users to position windows freely, akin to Apple Vision Pro. Although multitasking with multiple windows has been a part of Meta Horizon OS (previously Meta Quest OS) for some time, it currently only supports three virtual windows in a side-side arrangement.
A data miner named Luna discovered the experimental feature in version 67 of the Meta Quest Public Test Channel and shared a demonstration video, as reported by RoadtoVR.

Comparing Meta's Feature with Apple's Spatial Computing
The new feature brings the Quest 3 closer to Apple's spatial computing in mixed reality mode, but it doesn't appear to function identically. Users can move up to three windows from 2D apps, such as browsers or OS windows like libraries and settings, around their space while keeping another three docked.
However, other demonstrations indicate that the windows will only remember their placement within a limited distance and revert to default positions if you change orientation or reset the view.
The update also includes options to switch between curved and flat windows and a dimmer that reduces the brightness of virtual environments when using 2D apps, although this feature doesn't work in passthrough mode yet.
Apple Vision Pro vs Meta's Headset
In contrast, the Apple Vision Pro allows users to move windows around any space, lock them in place even while moving around or after removing the headset. This functionality enables users to interact with windows as if they were physical objects in their environment.
Recently, there has been an increase in advertisements showcasing the Quest 3's productivity potential rather than just focusing on gaming capabilities. While Meta's headset may not yet match the Vision Pro's performance, its significantly lower price point makes it an attractive alternative for consumers.
