Traditional methods for measuring carotenoids relied on large Raman spectroscopy machines. Over seven years, Samsung developed a compact sensor that combines multi-wavelength LEDs with photodetector arrays. Jinyoung Park from the Digital Health team integrated reflectance spectroscopy with LEDs to ensure high accuracy within a small design.

Advanced algorithms continuously calibrate readings to provide personalized results. The device scans the fingertip where melanin is minimal and applies light pressure to minimize haemoglobin interference. Clinical trials at Samsung Medical Center confirmed accuracy across diverse users.
