This spooky MIT-developed headset can read things you say in your mind

This sounds something straight out of a sci-fi movie. It's actually scary to know that robots can read your mind. Well, kinda. A team of developers from MIT Media Lab have developed a new headset called AlterEgo that can communicate with you without using any words.

How it works you ask? Just strap to your face, start talking, and it responds. All this happens without either one of you uttering a single word. You just have to say things in your head, and the headset will determine what you said. The device reads the signals that the brain sends to the wearer's mouth and jaw, and answers their queries.

MIT Media Lab believes that users will soon be able to control home appliances like TVs through their mind. They explained how AlterEgo communicates with through bone-conduction headphones, which encircle the ear canal by sending sound vibrations through their face bones. This also makes it easier for the device to talk to the user when they are speaking to someone else.

AlterEgo had an accurate transcription rate of 92 percent in a trail that involved 15 people. Arnav Kapur who lead the development describes the headset as an "intelligence-augmentation device."

"So, my students and I have for a very long time been experimenting with new form factors and new types of experience that enable people to still benefit from all the wonderful knowledge and services that these devices give us, but do it in a way that lets them remain in the present," said Pattie Maes, Kapur's thesis advisor at MIT Media Lab.

This innovative technology utilizes minerals and some proprietary ingredients tucked into fibers and yarns. The company has partnered with apparel brands across the globe. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration has labeled Celliant a medical device and general wellness product.
