You must have already known by now that most of the smartphone makers have started showing interest in the wearable device market. One of the smartwatches that was well received by the Android fans and wearable markets was surprisingly launched by popular mobile phone chip maker Qualcomm last year. The watch called by the name of Toq is compatible with all the Android phones with Jelly Bean v4.0.3 and later version of OS. Thus, that is one important reason the smartwatch did well in the market. On the contrary, Samsung's smartwatches don't support other devices except its own.

Another amazing thing which you will find in Toq is a big Mirasol display, which is similar to E Inkereader screens, that allows the users to easily view the contents under direct sunlight. Unlike most eReaders, it can display colors and can refresh fast enough for watching videos. It also includes speech recognition technology from Nuance to allow users dictate replies to text messages. Moreover, the Toq smartwatch also has a backlight for when there is no outside light source.

The device is extremely tempting and although it has a bulky look compared to other smartwatches, it's loaded with features that might turn you into one of its fans.

However, today we have come up with a comparative review between Samsung's latest Gear Fit device and Qualcomm Toq. Although Gear Fit as the name suggests, is more of a fitness device, but it does work as a smartwatch as well. Both these devices are capable of showing the notifications from the parent smartphone.

Before we go ahead and take a look at the comparative review of the two devices, lets look at the specs first.

Qualcomm Toq comes with a 1.55 inch Mirasol display offering a resolution of 288x192 pixels. It runs on Qualcomm OS. It is powered by a 200 MHz Cortex-M3 microcontroller and comes with a 240mAh battery which will be charged wirelessly via Qualcomm's WiPower box. It uses Bluetooth 3.0 to get connected with the headset and parent phone.

On the other hand, Samsung Gear Fir comes with a 1.84-inch Curved Super AMOLED Touchscreen Display offering a resolution of 432 x 128 pixels. It is IP67 Certified Dust and Water Resistant device. It comes with 4 GB of Internal storage capacity. It is powered by a 1 GHz Dual-core processor coupled with 512 MB of RAM. The fitness device draws its energy from a 210mAh battery giving typical usage of up to 3 to 4 days and low usage up to 5 days.

Here is a concise comparative rundown between the features of Qualcomm's Toq and Samsung's Gear Fit wearable device in the following sliders:

Build and Design

Build and Design

Samsung Gear Fit is one device which is very tempting and comes with a conspicuous design. It uses a curved display which is glossy and looks clean all the time. Although the display is small you can read the notification and other messages by swiping down and up on the display itself. Gear Fit uses an OLED display which means power consumption is pretty low, which leads to less battery consumption. Moreover, since it is IP certified device, it is a water and dust resistant wearable gadget.

On the contrary, Qualcomm Toq is pretty bulky and comes with a huge display that enables the users to read at ease unlike in the Gear Fit. Design wise, the device is very much similar to Sony smartwatches with a squarish display.

Battery Charging Technology

Battery Charging Technology

Both the devices come with a unique battery chargers. Samsung Gear fit comes with a charger and an adapter that attaches with the Gear Fit.

On the other hand, the Qualcomm Toq uses a wireless charging technology (Qualcomm's WiPower box). Toq is powered by a higher 240mAh while the Gear Fit draws its energy from a 210mAh battery. And the Mirasol display that the Toq from Qualcomm uses is comparatively better than that of the Gear Fit in terms of power consumption.

Display

Samsung Gear Fit uses an OLED curved display which is very effective and smoothly runs, while the Toq uses a user-friendly Mirasol display. The screen is always on, allowing you to see the time without having to turn the screen on by pressing a button.

In other words, the display is automatically adjusted by the light it receives. Hence, it relatively consumes lesser battery.

In contrast, if you are in the dark, you can tap the upper part of the band to activate the sensors and use the backlight to view the necessary.

Since Gear Fit is more fitness oriented gadget, it offers a number of features and has added hardware like heart-rate sensors at the back of the device. But Qualcomm Toq doesn't have such built-in hardware and features, it uses apps to do that. It doesn't give a heart rate count what-so-ever.

Moreover, Gear Fit comes with more advantages like silent alarm (only vibrations), Tracks your sleep, has a battery life indicator and tracks distance. Toq offers few of these features provided you have the right app installed in the parent phone.

Which One Is The Best?

Which One Is The Best?

Samsung Gear Fit surely wins the race in design and features arena. It has a built-in sensors which can calculate the heart-rates and also keep check on the distance you are traveling and more. It has basically got almost everything that a fitness oriented person would need.

However, in terms of battery technology and convenience that it offers to the users with its always-on display Qualcomm's Toq is also a very remarkable device. Also the use of the touch sensors in the upper and lower part of the straps, which enables users to unlock the screen and turn the backlight on is an intelligent move from Qualcomm.

One thing that will also be at the advantage of Qualcomm Toq is that it is compatible with Android 4.0.3 and later versions of Android device. While Gear Fit is only compatible to select Samsung Phones.

Unboxing and Quick Video Review

The Gear Fit, arriving after the likes of Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, is only the third Gear sibling and is basically a wearable band that currently aims to be big on style, although we are not really convinced by the kind of functions involved with it since the device is a little less function-heavy compared to its predecessors -- Note: No camera, no remote functionality and no storage options. Of course, we are just starting out, as far as the wearable technology is concerned. But considering the kind of design pattern Samsung has been looking into for the Gear Fit, it seems like the company could be that close in becoming a primary name in the wearables sector. For more Tech News
