Echo Spot Review: Small, Smart, and Surprisingly Capable

Amazon just launched its latest Alexa-enabled device - The Echo Spot - in India. After spending two weeks with Amazon's latest Echo Spot, I'm convinced that smart alarm clocks like these deserve more attention than they get. Calling it a smart alarm clock will be an understatement as it does way more than what a clock can do.

Priced at ₹8,999 (currently available at ₹6,449 for an introductory price), this compact gadget might just be what your bedside table has been missing, especially if you're looking to dip your toes into smart home automation. If you're looking to buy one for your home, I'd recommend you to know what I am about to tell you in this review.

Design and Build

The Echo Spot's design is refreshingly practical. At 405g, it's substantial enough to stay put when you're fumbling for the snooze button half-awake, yet compact enough to fit on cramped nightstands. I particularly appreciate the new flat front design and premium build quality - something often missing in this price range. The matte finish on all three color variants (Black, Glacier White, and Ocean Blue) does an excellent job hiding fingerprints and dust, a crucial consideration for Indian homes.

The front is mostly taken up by the screen, with the speaker mesh covering the remaining space at the bottom. Although it appears like a massive screen from afar, only the rectangular center portion displays content, the rest is just a border. You'll find three buttons on top: two for volume and one for muting the mics. These buttons are easy to find by touch once you get the hang of it, but honestly, I rarely used them since I could just ask Alexa to handle those controls.

Plus, the power cable is super long, so you won't need any extension cords or power boards. It'll easily reach those faraway outlets, which is a nice bonus since short cables can be a real pain and make things messy.

Display and Interface

The 2.83-inch display with 320 x 240p resolution is surprisingly versatile in daily use. While reading text messages or checking calendar events, I never felt constrained by the screen size. The six animated clock faces with customizable color themes are thoughtfully designed, and the auto-brightness adjustment works well in varying light conditions. Touch response is snappy, and the UI feels polished - you can tell Amazon has refined this over multiple iterations.

Sound Quality

The upgraded 1.73-inch forward-firing mono driver punches above its weight. Unlike typical alarm clocks, the Echo Spot handles both spoken content and music with impressive clarity. Bass response is naturally limited by its size, but vocal reproduction is excellent - whether it's listening to morning news or playing some light music while working. Even at 70% volume, there's minimal distortion, though I wouldn't push it further.

Smart Features

Alexa's Indian English recognition has come a long way, rarely stumbling over accents or complex commands. Matter support is future-proof, ensuring compatibility with upcoming smart home devices. The ability to control everything from lights, appliances to smart plugs makes it a convenient bedside companion.

Additionally, some new interactive animations to specific commands on the screen are kind of cute and keep you engaged. Some of these commands are, 'good morning', 'Thank you', 'love you' and so on.

Practical Use

My go to use with this device was to play music and listen to podcasts. However, for typical Indian households, the Echo Spot proves its worth beyond just being a music player or an alarm clock. During the review, I found myself using it to set reminders, control smart appliances, and even as a night light with its ambient mode. The lack of a camera might seem like a downside, but it's actually a privacy benefit for bedroom placement.

It could have been a better companion for more use cases if the display could feature things like recipes instead of sending them to the phone's Alexa app. However, being able to set multiple timers via voice while your hands are messy with atta is genuinely useful. I found myself using it to convert measurements (particularly helpful when following international recipes), setting reminders for pressure cooker whistles, and even ordering groceries through Amazon Fresh when running low on ingredients.

The device also shines in a home office setup. Its compact size means it doesn't eat up precious desk space, and the integration with calendar apps helps keep track of schedules. I particularly liked the ability to quickly check traffic conditions before heading out for office - a handy feature for traffic-heavy cities.

The Drawback

I still feel the utilisation of the display could've been better. Features like showing recipes on screen, giving a preview from CCTV or security cameras is something I would want on a gadget that is capable of it, has a screen and is priced ₹8,999.

Comparison To Competitors

What makes the Echo Spot interesting is its unique position in the smart home ecosystem. While the Echo Show 5 (₹8,999) offers a larger screen and video calling capabilities, the Spot's compact form factor and alarm-focused features serve a different purpose entirely.

The Echo Dot with Clock (₹4,999) comes close with its LED display, but the Spot's touchscreen interface offers significantly more functionality and control. Interestingly, neither Google nor Apple has anything similar in their lineup, giving Amazon a clear advantage in this niche.

Should You Buy It?

At its introductory price of ₹6,449, the Echo Spot offers excellent value for what it delivers. It's a significant upgrade over basic smart speakers like the Echo Dot, while being more practical than larger displays for most Indian homes.

Buy it if:

  • You want a smart alarm clock that does more than just tell time
  • You're looking to start your smart home journey
  • You need a compact smart display for tight spaces

Skip it if:

  • You primarily want a device for video calls or watching content
  • You're looking for room-filling sound
  • You're on a tight budget (the regular Echo Dot might serve you better)

Bottom line

The Echo Spot (2024) is a thoughtfully designed smart display that's particularly well-suited for Indian homes. While not perfect, it strikes a good balance between functionality and price, especially at its introductory offer.
