Samsung Gear S Smartwatch Officially Unveiled at IFA 2014: 5 Features We Love

Samsung has been touted several times in the past to have a big UNPACKED event at this year's IFA event in Berlin. And true to its promise, the South Korean heavyweight has unveiled a slew of devices that range from smartphones to VR headsets, to a brand new smartwatch.

Keeping all others out of the context for the moment, we are focusing on the new and enhanced Gear S smartwatch. We have indeed been hearing about how Samsung would go ahead and introduce the new Note to its users, but the Gear S comes as an added bonus.

Samsung today unveiled the Samsung Gear S, the next generation smart wearable device, at this year's IFA. The new Samsung Gear S is said to deliver an up-to-date smart wearable experience, accompanied by 3G connectivity and optimized wearable features that are set to meet "the evolving needs of consumers."

"Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation," said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics.

"The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime," he added.

The Samsung Gear S comes with a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display, and provides a richer view with a beautiful and easy-to-use user interface. It will allow users to read messages and notifications with ease with features such as conversation view and condensed font.

Going through the specs once more, the new Gear S comes with a 2.0-inch Super AMOLED (360 x 480) display. It's powered by a dual core 1.0 GHz processor while the watch's OS is based on Tizen based wearable platform. It has dimensions of 39.8 x 58.3 x 12.5T with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

Communication features include 2G and 3G call, Bluetooth call, with support for contacts, notifications, messages, Emails, and even a QWERTY Keyboard. The watch supports Health and Fitness features with support for S Health and Nike+ Running.

As expected, the new Gear S is also IP67 certified dust and water resistant, while connectivity options include WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS/Glonass, Bluetooth 4.1 and USB 2.0. The Gear S will be available in global markets in phases through Samsung's retail channels, e-commerce websites and via carriers beginning October.
