Microsoft is certain to be busy with its next generation gaming console, but rumors have it that the company might be working on more than its Xbox. It has been reported by the Verge that Microsoft might be working on a set-top box that might be launched sometime next year.
The technology giant might be planning to launch the device along with its gaming console providing some sort of TV service along with it. This strategy is very appealing in the sense that providing TV service along with gaming would drastically increase its popularity making it part of a huge number of living rooms.
The set-top box, intended as a media streaming device will definitely prove to be a challenge to Apple TV and Roku. According to the Verge, sources indicated that even though full blown games cannot be played in the device, Microsoft plans to incorporate some casual games.
The box will be run on Windows 8 and a chipset incorporated in it will reduce the booting time to the minimum and also allow it to resume from sleep immediately. With the company trying to make its Xbox 360 from a gaming console to a media hub, the idea of a set-box is not that surprising. It is also claimed that a new phone will be introduced by Microsoft which will have the complete Xbox LIVE functionality.
Microsoft might be releasing its set-top box next year, possibly before the holiday season. The next-gen gaming console will have something for everyone which might make it the favorite next year.
