Kratos Could Return to Greece in a New God of War Side Project Next Year

As God of War marks its 20th anniversary, speculation about the franchise’s future is gaining momentum. While Santa Monica Studio remains tight-lipped about what’s next, recent rumors hint at a possible side project that could take Kratos back to his Greek mythology roots—a major shift after years spent in the Norse saga.

The talk of this return surfaced shortly after God of War Ragnarök received a free 20th-anniversary update, which included new in-game content under the Dark Odyssey Collection. While the update was well-received, fans were left wondering whether something more substantial was on the horizon.

A God of War Spin-Off Set in Ancient Greece Might Be Coming in 2025

A Greek Spin-Off in the Works?

Gaming journalist Jeff Grubb recently added fuel to the fire by claiming that a new God of War title is coming this year, but not in the form of a remaster or collection. “It’s a new side-story project,” Grubb shared, noting that the game will revisit the franchise’s original Greek mythology setting.

If true, this would mark the first return to Greece since 2013’s God of War: Ascension. However, the project is rumored to be a smaller spin-off rather than a full-scale sequel. The details remain vague, but the concept of diving back into the world that defined early Kratos could offer longtime fans a new perspective on a familiar setting.

What's Next for Santa Monica Studio?

Santa Monica Studio hasn’t confirmed any new titles since the release of Ragnarök’s Valhalla DLC in 2023. While speculation continues about the Greek-themed project, there's also chatter that the studio is quietly developing a new IP. A recent LinkedIn profile update from a team member hinted at this, though no official statements have followed.

Earlier this year, Sony scrapped two live service projects, one of which was rumored to be connected to God of War. That decision, along with the current silence, has only deepened curiosity about the studio’s direction.
