Activision Chief Addresses Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Criticism, Tells Fans to Wait For Modern Warfare 4

Call of Duty has been one of gaming's biggest franchises for years, but the recently-launched Black Ops 7 did not really deliver the experience fans were hoping for. With the game facing criticism over its campaign and a lack of fresh ideas, Activision has now reacted to the criticism. The publisher is hoping its upcoming release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, will help win players back.

Activision Chief Addresses Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Criticism

In a recent interview with The Game Business, Activision's chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl addressed the negative response to Black Ops 7 and explained how the studio is using player feedback to shape the next game. He also admitted that releasing two games from the same subseries in consecutive years was not what the community wanted.

Activision Admits Black Ops 7 Did Not Meet Expectations

Speaking to The Game Business, Bahl said Activision was not satisfied with every aspect of Black Ops 7 and had heard the criticism from players. He acknowledged that the franchise needed to offer something different rather than rely on another familiar release.

According to Bahl, releasing Black Ops 6 in 2024 and Black Ops 7 in 2025 did not go down well with the community. While the two games featured different settings and new gameplay elements, players were looking for a more noticeable change in tone and overall experience.

Black Ops 7 faced particular criticism for its single-player campaign, with some players feeling that it was a step backwards compared with its predecessor. Now, Activision is preparing to launch its next major entry, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4.

Modern Warfare 4 Will Return to a More Grounded Experience

Speaking of Modern Warfare 4, Bahl said that the goal is to deliver a cinematic and authentic experience while bringing back the tone that players associate with the series.

The upcoming game will take players to the Korean Peninsula, where tensions between North and South Korea escalate into a new conflict. Players will step into the role of Private Park Hyun-jun, with the campaign expected to feature a wide range of missions. Activision has described it as the largest campaign in Modern Warfare history.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026. Activision has also confirmed that the game will conclude the rebooted Modern Warfare series, which began in 2019.
