Battlefield 6 Arrives Without AI-Generated Content Amid EA's $55 Billion Buyout Plans
Battlefield 6, the latest instalment in Electronic Arts' shooter series, is now available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. EA has clarified that players will not encounter any content generated by AI in this game. This statement follows the company's announcement of a $50 billion leveraged buyout to go private, with investors eyeing AI for potential cost reductions.
Rebecka Coutaz, EA's VP general manager at Criterion and Dice, two studios involved in Battlefield 6's development, confirmed to BBC Newsbeat that no generative AI content is present in the final game. She mentioned that while generative AI was used during initial stages to provide developers with more creative freedom, it wasn't integrated into the game's development workflow.

AI's Role in Gaming
Coutaz views generative AI as beneficial for gaming. She described the technology as "very seducing" but noted its current limitations in game development processes. "If we can break the magic with AI it will help us be more innovative and more creative," she stated. EA has previously shown interest in exploring AI's potential within the gaming industry.
The gaming sector has seen resistance from both creatives and consumers regarding generative AI, despite its appeal to investors for cost-cutting possibilities. Earlier this year, video game voice actors reached an agreement with studios focusing on AI protections through their union SAG-AFTRA.
EA's Strategic Move
In late September, EA announced plans to go private through a $55 billion leveraged buyout deal. This involves investors like Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners. According to a Financial Times report (paywalled), these investors believe AI can significantly reduce EA's operating costs and help manage a $20 billion debt from JPMorgan.
Generative AI remains a contentious topic between creatives and large studios. While some see its potential for innovation and creativity enhancement, others are concerned about its impact on traditional roles within the industry. The debate continues as companies explore how best to integrate this technology into their operations.
As EA navigates these changes and explores AI's potential benefits, it remains committed to maintaining creativity and innovation within its games without compromising on quality or originality.
