BGMI Developer Krafton Pledges Rs 12.42 Billion Investment in Indian Gaming Industry

In a significant move that highlights its commitment to India, Krafton, the renowned gaming company responsible for BGMI, has unveiled a substantial investment plan. This ambitious initiative involves a staggering Rs 12.42 billion or $150 million injection into India's gaming and startup ecosystem over the next 2-3 years.

The Countdown to Continuation

As the 3-month trial period of BGMI's relaunch approaches its end, Krafton's massive investment could potentially pave the way for a triumphant continuation. With the imminent trial conclusion, the investment might serve as a testament to Krafton's dedication to the Indian market. Also, it might serve as a method for Krafton to satisfy the regulators' conditions for extending the game's availability beyond the trial phase.

Krafton Pledges Rs 12.42 Billion Investment in Indian Gaming Industry

A History of Investment

Krafton's investment journey in India has been remarkable. Over the past three years, the company has already injected around Rs 11.6 billion or $140 million into 11 Indian startups and the gaming sector. However, the road hasn't been without challenges.

Overcoming Challenges

Krafton faced a significant setback in India when it was banned by the Indian government in September 2020, along with 117 other apps of Chinese origin. The ban was rooted in concerns over user data privacy and security, specifically the sharing of data with its Chinese counterpart, Tencent. The Indian government invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act of 2000, citing these concerns as a threat to the nation's security.

The Road to Redemption

Recognizing India as a vital market, Krafton embarked on a journey to re-establish itself post-ban. An essential step was transforming PUBG into BGMI, tailored to Indian sensibilities. This transformation was accompanied by shifting servers to Microsoft Azure and navigating a meticulous relaunch process.

BGMI's Phenomenal Popularity

BGMI's popularity in India has been staggering. With a remarkable 175 million installations in India alone, constituting 24% of global installations, BGMI has solidified its status as a frontrunner in the gaming domain. The game's rebranding and India-specific content played pivotal roles in this success.
