CES 2025 | Nintendo Switch 2 Mock-up Reportedly Showcased with Larger Joy-Cons and Larger Display

Nintendo may not have had an official presence at CES, but it still managed to capture attention. Genki, a company known for its accessories, showcased a 3D-printed model of what is believed to be Nintendo's next console, the Switch 2. This mock-up suggests that the new console will be wider than its predecessor and feature slightly larger Joy-Con controllers for enhanced comfort.

In comparison to the Steam Deck OLED, the Switch 2 mock-up appears smaller. This is partly due to the less pronounced Joy-Cons, which lack the ergonomic grips of the Deck. However, it still seems closer in size to Valve's handheld than the original Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 Design and Features

Eddie Tsai, cofounder and CEO of Genki, shared with The Verge that the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will attach magnetically rather than using a sliding rail. To detach them, users will press a large button on each controller's backside. This button releases a pin that disconnects the magnets from the console chassis.

Tsai mentioned that while it's possible to remove the Joy-Cons with force, they feel secure during regular use. He refrained from disclosing where he obtained information about this new console.

The mounting channel of these Joy-Cons houses an optical sensor. With an additional attachment, they might offer mouse-like capabilities similar to Lenovo's Legion Go handheld device.

Nintendo has committed to unveiling its Switch successor before April 2025. As this deadline approaches, leaks and rumours about the new hardware have been circulating widely.

Nintendo Switch 2 Speculation and Leaks

In December, YouTube channel SwitchUp released a video featuring a non-functional 3D-printed mock-up of the Switch 2 from a Chinese case manufacturer. This model resembled an enlarged version of the current Switch and hinted at changes like a new USB-C port on top and an unfamiliar square button below the Home button on the right Joy-Con.

Shortly after, Dbrand announced its "Killswitch 2" case. CEO Adam Ijaz revealed it was designed using "actual dimensions" from a "3D scan of real hardware." Ijaz also noted his belief that Joy-Cons would attach magnetically. Dbrand's images showed a "C" printed on the new square button, though Ijaz was unsure of its purpose.

Switch 2 Anticipation Builds

A Reddit user later shared alleged photos of what seemed to be the Switch 2's dock and interior components of a Joy-Con. With April 2025 drawing nearer each day, anticipation for Nintendo's official announcement grows stronger.

Until Nintendo provides confirmation or further details about this much-awaited console, enthusiasts can only rely on these intriguing images for insight into what might come next.
