You Will Soon be Able to Download Retro Game Emulators Through Apple’s App Store

In a significant update, Apple has decided to relax its App Store guidelines, notably allowing retro game emulators on its platform. This enables these emulators to offer downloadable games globally, provided they adhere to all relevant laws.

This move is a departure from Apple's previous stance, which prohibited game emulators on iOS, compelling iPhone users to resort to jailbreaking or other methods to access these games.

Apple Allows Retro Console Emulators on the App Store

The inclusion of retro console emulators is anticipated to cater to the needs of iPhone users, especially in the European Union, where third-party app stores have gained traction due to previous restrictions. This update by Apple could potentially deter users from exploring alternative app stores.

Furthermore, Apple has revised its regulations regarding super apps, like WeChat. The new guidelines specify that mini-games and mini-apps within these platforms must utilize HTML5. This clarification indicates that these cannot be native apps and games. This adjustment appears as a response to various antitrust lawsuits, highlighting Apple's efforts to adapt its policies amidst legal challenges.

Changes in Response to Legal and Regulatory Pressure

Apple's policy changes also reflect its response to pressure from regulatory bodies, including the European Commission. In a notable rule update, Apple now permits music streaming apps in the European Union to feature in-app links directing users to external purchases and to display pricing information.

Additionally, developers are allowed to collect email addresses from users with the explicit aim of sending them links to purchase digital music content or services externally. These amendments come after the European Commission deemed Apple's anti-steering regulations as "illegal."

Despite Apple's adjustments, there is ongoing dissatisfaction from major players like Spotify, which criticizes Apple for continuing to levy commissions on purchases made via external links. Spotify's spokesperson, Jeanne Moran, expressed discontent with Apple's defiance against the Commission's directives, highlighting the potential for noncompliance proceedings against Apple starting April 6th, including daily fines.
