EA Shuts Down BioWare, The Studio That Gave Us Mass Effect And Dragon Age
Electronic Arts (EA) is shutting down BioWare, the gaming studio behind some of the most influential role-playing games (RPGs) of the past three decades. This marks the end of a studio that helped shape how players experience story-driven games, with titles such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

BioWare confirmed the news in a statement shared on X, saying that it was bidding adieu after more than 30 years. The studio also confirmed that early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending, dealing another blow to fans who had been waiting for the next entry in the franchise.
The closure comes as part of wider job cuts at EA, with around 400 employees reportedly affected. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, BioWare had around 50 employees remaining before the shutdown.
BioWare Confirms Closure After More Than 30 Years
In its statement, BioWare looked back at the games it had made over more than three decades, including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem.
The studio said it had been more than just a workplace, describing itself as a home for the people who developed its games and the players who brought their fictional worlds to life. BioWare also acknowledged that closing the studio and ending early development on the next Mass Effect project were difficult decisions.
The statement reads, "There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition."
BioWare also thanked players for their role in making its games memorable, pointing to the choices, characters and stories that fans had connected with over the years.
What Made BioWare A Big Name In Gaming?
BioWare built its reputation with role-playing games that placed storytelling and player choice at the centre of the experience. Its early titles, including the original Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, helped popularise games in which decisions could influence the story and relationships between characters.
The studio reached a wider audience with the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. Both became known for their fictional worlds, memorable characters and choices that could shape how players experienced their stories.
However, BioWare's more recent releases also faced challenges. Games such as Mass Effect: Andromeda and Dragon Age: The Veilguard received a mixed response from players, adding to questions about the studio's direction. Despite that, BioWare retained a loyal fan base, with many players continuing to celebrate its older games.
What Happens To Mass Effect And Dragon Age Now?
The biggest immediate development for fans is the end of early development on the next Mass Effect project. BioWare's statement confirms that work on the project is ending, but it does not say if the entire Mass Effect franchise is permanently cancelled.
The future of Dragon Age is also unclear. BioWare has confirmed that the studio is closing, but its statement does not explain what will happen to the franchise or whether EA plans to continue either series through another team.
For now, this marks the end of BioWare as a studio after more than 30 years. Its games helped define story-driven RPGs for generations of players, and its departure leaves questions about the future of the franchises that made it a household name among gamers.
