GTA 5 on PC Gets a Big Free Update on March 4: Ray Tracing, Faster Load Times, New Vehicles, and More

After nearly a decade since its PC release, Grand Theft Auto 5 is finally getting a free upgrade that brings long-awaited technical improvements and GTA Online features that were previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that the update will roll out on March 4 for all existing PC players, offering enhancements like ray tracing, AI upscaling, faster load times, and support for higher resolutions and frame rates.

GTA 5 PC Upgrade Brings Ray Tracing and AI Upscaling

The most significant part of the upgrade is the graphical improvements. PC players will finally get full ray tracing support, including ambient occlusion, global illumination, ray traced shadows, and reflections. This brings the PC version in line with the console upgrades, making the game's lighting and overall visual quality more immersive.

Rockstar is also adding AI upscaling with support for NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR1, and FSR3, allowing players to boost performance without sacrificing too much image quality. Faster load times are another key improvement, thanks to SSD and DirectStorage support, which will significantly reduce waiting times when launching the game or loading into new areas.

The game will now support higher resolutions, frame rates, and aspect ratios, giving players with high-end monitors more flexibility in how they experience Los Santos. For those using a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller on PC, the update will enable adaptive triggers and enhanced haptic feedback.

Rockstar has also improved the game's audio with Dolby Atmos support, enhancing the quality of dialogue, cinematics, and in-game music.

GTA Online Gets New Content and Quality-of-Life Improvements

GTA Online is also getting a set of new features that have so far been limited to consoles. The biggest additions include new vehicles and upgrades at Hao's Special Works, ambient animal encounters across San Andreas, and an improved career progression system that allows players to track their in-game achievements more effectively.

The game is also introducing an improved onboarding experience for new players. Those starting fresh in GTA Online will receive GTA$4,000,000 as an introductory bonus, allowing them to invest in property, vehicles, and businesses right from the start. The landing page has also been redesigned to help players jump into the action more quickly.

To enhance the multiplayer experience, Rockstar is implementing kernel-based anti-cheat protections and proactive voice chat moderation. These measures aim to create a more secure and enjoyable environment for players, reducing the impact of cheaters and toxic behavior.

GTA+ Membership Now Available on PC

For the first time, PC players will be able to subscribe to GTA+, the premium membership service for GTA Online. GTA+ provides monthly GTA$500,000 deposits, exclusive discounts, special vehicle upgrades, and access to the Vinewood Club, which includes a 100-vehicle garage and an in-game app for managing businesses, vehicles, and earnings.

Additionally, GTA+ members will gain access to a selection of classic Rockstar games via the GTA+ Games Library, further expanding the value of the subscription.

Will the Previous PC Version Still Be Supported?

Rockstar has confirmed that the older version of GTA 5 on PC will remain available for players who do not meet the hardware requirements for the upgrade. However, the new upgrade will exist as a separate version, meaning players on the older build will not be able to join online sessions with those using the upgraded version.

Support for FiveM mods will continue on the current version of GTA 5, with plans to extend compatibility to the upgraded version in the future.

How to Upgrade to the New Version of GTA 5 on PC

Players who already own GTA 5 on PC will be able to upgrade for free starting March 4. The process is straightforward:

  • Open the Rockstar Games Launcher or Steam.
  • Navigate to GTA 5 in your game library.
  • Select the upgrade option when the update becomes available.
  • Download and install the upgraded version.
  • Transfer your Story Mode and GTA Online progress.

The update ensures that players can take full advantage of the new features while keeping their existing progress intact.

GTA 5's Biggest PC Upgrade Yet

With GTA 6 still on the horizon, this update gives PC players a reason to revisit GTA 5. The graphical enhancements, faster load times, and improved GTA Online features make the game feel more modern, while the addition of GTA+ membership brings new incentives for long-term engagement.
