GTA 6 Release Date Could Be Delayed Further as the Game is Reportedly Not 'Content Complete'
Grand Theft Auto 6 is now planned for release on 19 November 2026, but questions remain. Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick has said he is "highly confident" about that date. Yet fans worry GTA 6 could slip again, as Rockstar Games has shared few fresh updates about the project’s progress.
On the Ringer-Verse’s Button Mash podcast, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier discussed GTA 6’s status and possible delay. Schreier said the project still appeared unfinished the last time sources spoke. Even so, the new November 2026 launch target seemed to Schreier more "real" and "solid" than earlier plans.

GTA 6 Delays and Release Date Timeline
GTA 6’s schedule has already shifted several times. The first trailer arrived on 3 December 2023 and mentioned a 2025 window. Take-Two later narrowed that to autumn 2025. In May 2025, Rockstar pushed the release to 26 May 2026, before delaying again in November and fixing the date at 19 November 2026.
Strauss Zelnick responded to the second delay by stating that Take-Two was still "highly confident" in the new date. The company has framed each change as extra development time. Rockstar has said this should help GTA 6 launch with the level of polish people expect from the series.
GTA 6 Development Progress and Rockstar Games Approach
Schreier said GTA 6 had not yet reached a content-complete stage, based on recent information. "This time around, this is a big and complicated game, and the last I heard, it was still not content complete. That is to say that people were still finishing things up, still finalizing levels and missions, and seeing what's going to make it into the game," he said.
Schreier went on to explain how studios usually plan their work. "Typically, the way that game development works, you have your feature complete, your content complete, your bug testing phases, and there's a lot of boundaries blurred along the way in all of those different stages. But they are still making stuff, and we'll hopefully be done with that soon, and just have a whole bunch of time for fixing bugs. But even during those phases, there's always someone who wants to sneak in some last-minute stuff," he added.
Pressure After Red Dead Redemption 2 Delays
Schreier compared GTA 6’s path to Rockstar’s earlier blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2. That game was first announced for autumn 2017, then delayed to spring 2018. It slipped again to an autumn slot and finally launched on 26 October 2018. Schreier said a similar pattern for GTA 6 would not leave him "super shocked".

Using Red Dead Redemption 2 as a reference point, GTA 6 could still reach players late in 2026 if no major new issues appear. Schreier’s comments suggested that while work remains, Rockstar is moving towards the testing and polishing phase. However, he also left room for another possible shift if production demands it.
Rockstar Games Quality Goals and Financial Stakes
According to Schreier, Take-Two and Rockstar are under heavy pressure to deliver. "The stock of Take-Two lives or dies on this game. Every time this game slips, their shares drop 10 percent, I should say. So yeah, it's not something that they will release in any sort of compromised state. So, even if it comes to October and they're like, 'you know, the game is not a 100 percent ready,' I suspect they would rather slip than release it."
Rockstar has said extra time from the last delay would help achieve the expected standard. "We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience," the developer said in its update. A second GTA 6 trailer also released on 6 May 2025, keeping interest high despite the longer wait.
| Event | Date / Window |
|---|---|
| First GTA 6 trailer, initial window | 3 December 2023, 2025 release window |
| Take-Two targets launch period | Autumn 2025 |
| First delay announcement | Release moved to 26 May 2026 |
| Second delay announcement | Release moved to 19 November 2026 |
While fans speculate about another delay, current signs point to Rockstar focusing on finishing content and then polishing. Schreier’s remarks and Zelnick’s public confidence suggest the team aims to meet 19 November 2026, but both the development scale and financial stakes mean GTA 6 could move again if Rockstar decides quality is not yet where it should be.
