Helldivers 2 Launches on Xbox Series S/X This August, Pre-Orders Open Now
In an unexpected but telling move, Helldivers 2 — Sony’s hit co-op shooter originally launched on PS5 and PC — is making its way to Xbox Series X and S. The third-person shooter, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, will be available on Microsoft’s consoles starting August 26, becoming the first-ever Sony-published title to debut on Xbox hardware.
The game is now up for pre-order on the Xbox Store in both Standard and Super Citizen editions.

A Game with a Momentum-Fueled Journey
When Helldivers 2 dropped in 2024, it quickly found a massive audience. Launched simultaneously on PS5 and PC, the game not only marked Sony’s biggest PC debut to date, but also became PlayStation’s fastest-selling title — selling 12 million copies in just its first 12 weeks.
A year later, the title’s appeal hasn’t slowed. This isn’t just a one-off crossover — it could signal a strategic shift in how Sony approaches its live service games going forward. Until now, Microsoft had released a few of its first-party games on PlayStation, but this is the first time the roles have reversed.
Arrowhead Responds to Community Demand
The Xbox release was announced by Arrowhead Game Studios on X (formerly Twitter). Chief Creative Officer Johan Pilestedt acknowledged that players had been calling for an Xbox version for some time.
In a follow-up post on Xbox Wire, game director Mikael Eriksson emphasized that the decision was community-driven.
The game’s shift to Xbox is also happening at a time when Microsoft is restructuring its internal studios, recently cancelling Perfect Dark and shutting down one of its game development arms. The decision to welcome a Sony-published game onto its platform adds a curious wrinkle to the broader console landscape.
Full Crossplay and Two Editions to Choose From
When it arrives on Xbox, Helldivers 2 will fully support crossplay between all platforms — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This is essential for a game built around online co-op, and it ensures that Xbox players won’t be joining the party late or alone.
Two editions will be available for purchase:
- Standard Edition – ₹2,499
- Super Citizen Edition – ₹3,999
The Super Citizen bundle includes exclusive armor, weapons, and in-game cosmetics.
What This Means for PlayStation’s Strategy
Sony has historically kept its first-party games tied closely to its own hardware. But with its aggressive push into live service models and an increasingly cross-platform gaming culture, the decision to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox might not be a one-time exception.
If the game performs well on Microsoft’s consoles — and given its track record, it likely will — we could see future PlayStation titles, particularly those designed for online engagement, make similar moves.
The shift also comes at a time when exclusivity seems to be softening across the industry. Games are becoming services. Platforms are becoming access points, not walls.
