Inside the Sony PS5 Slim: Teardown Reveals Inner Workings and More

Sony's latest PlayStation 5 iteration, commonly referred to as the PS5 Slim, has garnered substantial attention due to its more compact design and the inclusion of a detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive.

Set to hit the US market this month, this revamped model has already undergone extensive teardowns by prominent YouTubers, such as Linus Tech Tips and Dave2D, shedding light on what's under the hood.

No Smaller on the Inside

The PS5 Slim has a more compact design, but its internal components are largely unchanged. The processor is still a 6nm variant, the same as the one in the updated model that was released in September of the previous year.

However, this is a slight change from the original PS5, which had a 7nm processor. A system power consumption test conducted by Linus Tech Tips revealed that both the existing and new models have similar power consumption levels.

Modular Design and Detachable Disc Drive

One of the key factors enabling the PS5 Slim's more slender appearance is its modular design. The detachable disc drive, which can be easily removed without the need for any tools, plays a crucial role in achieving this slim profile. The redesign offers both convenience and versatility to users.

Enhanced Cooling and Connectivity

The internal layout of the PS5 Slim also features an additional heat pipe connected to a smaller base plate compared to the original PS5. Moreover, the cooling fan boasts a 19-blade design for efficient thermal management.

On the connectivity front, the back of the console showcases one 5GB port and three 10GB ports, providing various options for high-speed data transfer. Additionally, the front panel includes a pair of USB-C ports, ensuring compatibility with modern peripherals.

Availability

The Sony PS5 Slim is slated to be released later this month. According to a leak last month, the console may be available in the US on November 10.
