Is GTA 6 Pushed to 2026? Ex-Rockstar Developer Shares Thoughts
If you're a Grand Theft Auto fan, you've probably heard the rumors flying around about GTA 6 being delayed-again. The talk of the game possibly getting pushed back to 2026 has left many of us wondering when we'll actually get our hands on it.
While there's no official word from Rockstar yet, a former developer from the studio has weighed in on the situation, offering a bit of insight into how things might unfold.

Will GTA 6 Be Delayed? Here's What We Know So Far
The rumor mill kicked into high gear recently when it was claimed that GTA 6 might not come out until 2026. That set off a wave of reactions from fans, with some feeling frustrated and others hoping it was just a misunderstanding. Rockstar developers have since downplayed these rumors, saying they have no knowledge of a delay. So, for now, it seems like the game is still on track for a 2025 release.
But just to keep things interesting, former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij chimed in, suggesting that even if a delay happens, it probably won't be decided until sometime in 2025.
He shared his perspective based on his experience working on previous GTA titles, mentioning that GTA 4 was delayed only four months before its planned release. In other words, we won't know for sure until we get closer to the current release window.
Rockstar's Approach: Quality Over Deadlines
Rockstar is known for not rushing its games out the door, and that's one of the reasons their titles are so popular. According to Vermeij, delays aren't something new for Rockstar-it's something they've done before to make sure a game meets their standards.
He recalled the delay of GTA 4, explaining that the game "wasn't ready" at the time, and it would have been a disaster if they had stuck with the original schedule. For Rockstar, it seems that getting the game right is more important than hitting a specific date.
Vermeij also hinted that Rockstar won't release GTA 6 until they're completely happy with it, even if that means pushing the date back a bit. So while we're all eager for GTA 6, it might be worth the wait if it means getting a polished and complete game.
Who Decides When GTA 6 Comes Out?
Interestingly, Vermeij mentioned that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, usually lets Rockstar make the final call on when to release their games. Even if Take-Two shares a tentative date, Rockstar seems to have the freedom to delay if needed. So, any rumored release dates should be taken with a grain of salt.
Vermeij also addressed questions from fans about when GTA 6 might come to PC, and his response was a bit of a downer for PC gamers. He suggested that the PC version might not arrive until 2027, based on how Rockstar typically rolls out its games-console versions first, with a later PC release.
What's Next for GTA 6?
At the moment, everything points to GTA 6 being released in late 2025. However, delays aren't off the table, and Rockstar will likely make that decision closer to the release window. If the game does get delayed, we might not hear about it until next year.
For now, fans will have to wait and see, but it's clear that Rockstar's priority is delivering a high-quality experience. While delays can be frustrating, getting a polished game that lives up to the GTA legacy could be worth the extra wait.
