Microsoft Confirms Xbox ROG Ally and Ally X Launch on Gamescom 2025 Opening Day
Microsoft has officially announced the launch date for its Xbox-branded ROG Ally handhelds. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X will be available from October 16, as confirmed during Gamescom 2025's opening day. However, pricing details remain undisclosed. Microsoft also introduced a Handheld Compatibility Program, similar to Valve's 'Deck Verified' label on Steam Deck, to indicate game optimisation levels for these devices.
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X will initially be available in select countries, including Australia, Belgium, Canada, and several others. The base model will reach China in early 2026. Microsoft plans to expand availability to other markets like Brazil, India, Indonesia, and Thailand at a later date.

Pricing Challenges and Economic Considerations
Despite leaks suggesting prices of EUR 599 (around Rs. 60,400) for the ROG Xbox Ally and EUR 899 (around Rs. 90,700) for the ROG Xbox Ally X in Europe, official pricing remains unconfirmed. Jason Ronald from Microsoft highlighted the difficulty in balancing affordability with features like battery life in a mobile form factor. Asus mentioned that more information would be shared in September and October.
Handheld Compatibility Program Details
The Handheld Compatibility Program aims to ensure seamless gaming experiences on the new handhelds. Games will carry labels such as "Handheld Optimized" or "Mostly Compatible." The former indicates games ready with default settings and clear visuals, while the latter may need minor adjustments for optimal play.
Additionally, games will feature a "Windows Performance Fit" indicator to inform users about expected performance levels. A combination of "Handheld Optimized" and a positive Windows Performance Fit badge suggests smooth gameplay on these devices.
Advanced AI Features
The high-end ROG Xbox Ally X will include AI features powered by its AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset. Two features are set for early 2026: Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), which enhances resolution and framerate using NPU technology; and Highlight reels, an AI-driven tool that captures notable gameplay moments.
Microsoft and Asus also plan to introduce additional technical features and compatible accessories like the newly unveiled ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller. Enhancements for docking experiences on larger screens are also anticipated. The introduction of these handhelds marks an exciting development in gaming technology. With innovative features and compatibility programs, they promise an enhanced gaming experience for users worldwide.
