Microsoft Hiked Prices of Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Accessories, and First Party Games in These Countries

Microsoft has announced a significant price increase for its Xbox range, affecting not only the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles but also accessories and first-party games. This change will impact consumers in the UK, North America, Australia, and Europe. Both new and existing Xbox users will experience these price adjustments.

The Xbox Series S, initially priced at £250 / $300 / AU$500 in 2021, will now be sold at £300 / $380 / AU$550. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X will see an increase from £449 / $499 / AU$749 to £500 / $600 / AU$850. The price hikes extend to the 512GB version of the Xbox Series S, the discless Xbox Series X Digital, and the 2TB Xbox Series X.

Accessories and Game Price Adjustments

In addition to consoles, Microsoft is raising prices on accessories. The standard Xbox Wireless Controller will now cost £60 / $65 / AU$100, up from its original launch price of £55 / $60 / AU$90. Official headsets are also affected by this increase but only in the US and Canada.

First-party game titles are not exempt from these changes. Microsoft has confirmed that some games will reach up to $80 by December's holiday season. However, international pricing details for future games remain unconfirmed.

Market Conditions and Economic Challenges

Microsoft attributes these price increases to "market conditions and the rising cost of development." Other companies are facing similar pressures; Sony recently announced a price hike for the PlayStation 5 due to "a challenging economic environment." Nintendo's new Switch 2 console has also drawn attention with its high game prices.

The term "market conditions" likely refers to tariff issues in the United States. Microsoft's Xbox hardware is primarily manufactured in China, which faces high tariff rates. While disappointing, this price rise is not entirely unexpected given these circumstances.

Microsoft notes that "Xbox Series S and X availability may continue to change over time depending on the retailer and by country." This statement suggests potential stock shortages reminiscent of early days when both Xbox and PlayStation consoles were scarce.
These developments reflect broader industry trends where companies adjust pricing strategies amid economic challenges. Consumers should prepare for increased costs across various gaming platforms as manufacturers navigate these market dynamics.
