Nintendo Switch 2 is Launching in 2025 with Improved Controllers, USB-C Port, Backward Compatibility

Nintendo has unveiled initial details about the Switch 2 through a video released earlier today. While the exact release date remains unspecified, it is anticipated to launch in 2025. The console bears resemblance to its predecessor but is larger in size. The Joy-Con controllers are black with coloured accents and attach to the console's sides, possibly using magnets as suggested by leaks.

The new console features a USB-C port located next to a 3.5mm headphone jack on top. Its kickstand has been redesigned into a U-shape, and the dock now sports a more rounded appearance. Additionally, there will be a separate controller grip for attaching the Joy-Cons, similar to the original Switch setup.

Enhanced Controller Features

Notably, the Joy-Cons have undergone several changes. A new button is positioned under the home button on the right Joy-Con, which had appeared in earlier leaks. The SL and SR buttons are larger compared to those on the original Switch's Joy-Cons. The video also hints at using Joy-Cons like a mouse.

The only game showcased in the video appears to be a new Mario Kart title. However, Nintendo assures that the console will support backward compatibility with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. It does caution that "certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2."

Upcoming Events and Compatibility

Nintendo plans to reveal more information during a Nintendo Switch 2-focused Direct event scheduled for April 2nd, 2025. Specific timing details will be announced later. Fans might get their first hands-on experience at events in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas later in April, with ticket registration opening on January 17th at 3 PM ET via Nintendo's website.

The original Nintendo Switch was a groundbreaking hybrid of home console and handheld device, leading to its immense success as one of the bestselling consoles ever. It hosted some of Nintendo's most acclaimed games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey.

Sales Milestones

Since its launch, the original Switch has sold an impressive 146.04 million units worldwide, making it Nintendo's second-highest-selling system after the DS, which sold 154.02 million units. This achievement surpasses other popular consoles like the Wii (101.63 million units) and Game Boy (118.69 million units).

Over time, mid-cycle hardware updates were introduced for the original Switch lineup. These included the smaller Nintendo Switch Lite and an OLED version featuring an enhanced display among other improvements.

Rumours about Nintendo's next console began circulating from accessory manufacturers starting December last year. Dbrand shared what it believed were accurate dimensions of the hardware while suggesting magnetic attachment for Joy-Con controllers based on its understanding. At CES 2025, Genki presented a mockup of what it envisioned as the successor to the current Switch model using 3D printing technology.
