PS5 Pro Launch Timeline Design, Moniker Leaked: Sony Could Ditch the Disc Drive

The PlayStation 5 Pro, an upgraded version of the PS5, has been leaked. This new console has been anticipated within the gaming industry for some time, with Sony expected to announce it before the year ends. While Sony hasn't confirmed any major details about the PS5 Pro, recent leaks have provided insights into its design and potential release timeline.

According to billbil-kun, a reliable leaker known for accurate information on unannounced games and hardware, the new console will be named "PS5 Pro." This follows Sony's previous naming convention, like when they launched the PS4 Pro three years after the PS4 in 2016.

PS5 Pro Design Details

The tipster shared a sketch of the PS5 Pro based on a visual from its final packaging box. Although the actual visual couldn't be shared due to copyright reasons, the illustration shows a design akin to last year's PS5 Slim. The faceplates feature three horizontal black stripes, and it retains two USB Type-C ports and a power button at the front.

Interestingly, the sketch lacks a disc drive, suggesting it might be based on the digital version of the console. The leaker mentioned that an external disc drive could potentially be attached, similar to the PS5 Slim. This could be a strategic move by Sony to offer the console at a competitive price point.

Sony's Announcement Plans

Rumors suggest that Sony may host a PlayStation State of Play showcase soon. Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb hinted that this event might reveal the PS5 Pro. Billbil-kun indicated that Sony plans to announce the console "very soon," possibly in early September 2024.

Despite these leaks, Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of the PS5 Pro. However, with slowing sales of the current PS5 model, an upgraded version could rejuvenate interest in their gaming consoles. In their recent earnings report for March-June quarter, Sony sold 2.4 million PS5 units-below analysts' expectations of three million units.

The upcoming console is expected to retain its trademark white colorway and appear thicker than its slim counterpart. It will also ship with the same DualSense controller included with current PS5 models.

In summary, while details about the PS5 Pro continue to emerge through leaks and rumors, official confirmation from Sony is still awaited. The gaming community eagerly anticipates this announcement as it could significantly impact future sales and user experience.
