Qualcomm Snapdragon G Series of Chips Announced for Handheld Gaming Devices
Qualcomm has introduced its latest Snapdragon G Series, aimed at enhancing handheld gaming devices. This new lineup, revealed at the Game Developers Conference, succeeds last year's models. It includes the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 platforms. Each is crafted to cater to different gaming performance needs for a wide range of players.
Snapdragon G3 Gen 3: The Flagship Platform
The Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 stands out as the flagship in this series. It is the first in the Snapdragon G Series to support Lumen, Unreal Engine 5's dynamic global illumination and reflections system, specifically for Android handheld devices. Compared to its predecessor, it boasts a 30% boost in CPU performance and a 28% enhancement in graphics capabilities. Additionally, it offers improved power optimisation and energy efficiency.

Snapdragon G2 Gen 2: Balancing Performance and Efficiency
The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 is tailored for both gaming and cloud gaming on dedicated devices at 144 frames per second. Qualcomm highlights a significant performance leap with this platform, claiming a 2.3x increase in overall performance and a 3.8x improvement in GPU capabilities over the previous generation. Like its counterpart, it also supports Wi-Fi 7.
Snapdragon G1 Gen 2: Cloud Gaming Focus
Designed for cloud gaming on dedicated Android handhelds, the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 targets a wider audience. It can deliver up to 1080p resolution at 120 frames per second via Wi-Fi. This platform reportedly achieves an impressive 80% increase in CPU performance and a 25% boost in GPU performance for cloud-based games.

Wi-Fi connectivity is enhanced across all platforms with support for Wi-Fi 7, which aims to reduce latency while increasing bandwidth. This feature ensures smoother wireless connectivity during gameplay sessions.
Device manufacturers such as AYANEO, ONEXSUGAR, and Retroid Pocket are set to launch products powered by these new Snapdragon platforms starting from the first quarter of 2025.
