How Roblox’s New Makeup Feature Is Turning Avatars Into Creative Powerhouses
Roblox is expanding avatar customisation with a new Makeup category in its Avatar Marketplace. Users can now apply layered cosmetics across eyes, lips, face, eyebrows, and eyelashes, with over 100 community-created items already available and more expected from creators and brands.
Modular, Layered Customisation
The system is built around five subcategories, Eyes, Face, Lips, Eyelashes, and Eyebrows, allowing users to mix, match, and stack items. Unlike traditional editors that replace facial elements, Roblox enables layering, giving players fine control over placement and order. Creators can also offer bundled “full-face” looks while keeping individual elements editable.

Technology and Visual Detail
Roblox uses pre-mapped facial data to ensure cosmetics align correctly across all avatar styles, from realistic to stylised. The platform supports physically based rendering, enabling effects like gloss, shimmer, and metallic finishes. This allows both realistic beauty looks and experimental, fantasy-inspired designs.
Beyond Aesthetics: Gameplay and Creativity
Makeup isn’t limited to cosmetic use. Face paint and markings can enhance gameplay—for instance, distinguishing teams in competitive modes or adding camouflage in shooter environments. The system also supports character design in role-playing, social, and fashion-driven experiences, where visual identity is key.
Monetisation and Brand Integration
The feature opens new revenue opportunities for creators through item sales and limited-time offers. Brands are also entering the space. e.l.f. Beauty is an early partner, integrating virtual makeup into Roblox experiences like e.l.f. Up and Glow Up.As noted by Patrick O'Keefe, the initiative reflects how identity now spans both digital and physical spaces.
Strong Gen Z Engagement
Roblox reports users changed avatars 274 million times daily in early 2025, underscoring the importance of self-expression. Research with Ipsos shows:
58% of Gen Z users wore makeup recently, with 84% using it frequently
87% are open to buying virtual makeup monthly
85% feel more engaged when customising avatars
Additionally, 83% want real-world brands reflected in their avatars, and over 70% say using branded cosmetics digitally increases offline purchase consideration.
Overall, Roblox Avatar Makeup blends self-expression, gameplay utility, and monetisation, positioning it as a key bridge between virtual identity and real-world consumer behaviour.
