Slimmer and Sleeker: Sony Unveils the New PlayStation 5 Model for the Holiday Season
Sony has officially confirmed the release of the much-anticipated PlayStation 5 Slim, set to hit shelves just in time for the upcoming holiday season. As the first refresh of the current console generation, this announcement brings forth some significant changes and enhancements for gamers and enthusiasts alike.
The Compact Redesign
In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, expressed that Sony's motivation behind the PlayStation 5 Slim was to "address the evolving needs of players." This new PS5 model is a testament to their dedication to providing greater choice and flexibility for their user base.

One of the most noticeable changes with this new iteration is its compact form factor, reducing the volume by more than 30%. Additionally, it's lighter, with a weight reduction of 18% for the standard model and a notable 24% reduction for the Digital Edition. These changes make the PlayStation 5 Slim not only more accessible but also more practical for gamers who value a sleeker and more manageable design.
Ample Storage and Versatility
The PlayStation 5 Slim comes equipped with an impressive 1TB of storage for both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. This is a welcomed upgrade from the original 825GB storage, providing gamers with more space for their ever-expanding game libraries.
Moreover, the new model offers an intriguing option for those with the PS5 Digital Edition. Gamers now have the flexibility to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to their console at any time. This feature offers the best of both worlds, enabling digital-only gaming with the option to play physical game discs when desired.
