Sony Announces God of War Trilogy Remake and Drops Sons of Sparta at State of Play

Sony just concluded its February 2026 State of Play with two major updates for fans. A full God of War Trilogy Remake is now in development, while a new 2D spin-off, God of War Sons of Sparta, has been announced.

God of War Trilogy Remake

The God of War Trilogy Remake brings back the original three mainline titles. Sony has confirmed that the first trilogy of God of War games is being rebuilt, giving players another chance to follow Kratos' early saga across ancient Greece on modern platforms.

Sony confirms that this project is still in the early stages of development. It also says, 'It will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!''

God of War Sons of Sparta Announced

God of War Sons of Sparta is described as a 2D action platform game with a canon storyline. The narrative focuses on Kratos' youth, following harsh military training at the Agoge alongside brother Deimos, offering more detail on the characters' background before the events of the original trilogy.

Combat in God of War Sons of Sparta adapts the series' fast action into side-scrolling form. Kratos uses a spear and shield, while also wielding divine artefacts called Gifts of Olympus. These tools help players face many opponents, mixing returning classic enemies with new creatures inspired by lesser-known Greek myths.

The script for God of War Sons of Sparta comes from the Santa Monica Studio writing team behind God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. TC Carson returns as the adult Kratos and narrates the story, marking the first time in over a decade that TC Carson voices the character in a new release.

Visuals in God of War Sons of Sparta use hand-drawn pixel animation created by Mega Cat Studios. The team specialises in retro-style projects, and has reimagined well-known God of War foes for a 2D perspective, while expanding the enemy roster with designs drawn from parts of Greek mythology that previous games did not highlight.

God of War first launched in March 2005 on the PlayStation 2, beginning Kratos' long-running journey through mythological settings. With March 2026 closing out the 20th anniversary year of the series, Sony is marking the occasion by combining the new God of War Sons of Sparta release with the announcement of the wider God of War Trilogy Remake project.
