Sony Walks Back Controversial Helldivers 2 Policy: PC Users No Longer Have to Link PSN Account

Sony recently made a significant U-turn on its policy requiring players of Helldivers to link their Steam accounts with the PlayStation Network (PSN), following strong pushback from the gaming community.

Initially, on Friday, Sony declared that both new and existing players would need to connect their Steam and PSN accounts to continue enjoying Helldivers 2. This decision led to a substantial uproar, with Arrowhead Game Studios, the developer behind Helldivers 2, and Sony, facing extensive criticism.

The controversy escalated to the point where the game was review-bombed on Steam, resulting in a notable drop in its review scores. In response to the backlash, Sony announced on Monday that it would scrap the controversial requirement.

A statement shared on X from the PlayStation account read, "Helldivers fans -- we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward."

They acknowledged the importance of player feedback, especially from the PC community, in shaping their decisions moving forward. The move comes after Helldivers 2 received thousands of negative reviews over the weekend, significantly affecting the game's overall score on Steam. The recent reviews labeled the game as 'Mostly Negative,' while its overall status shifted to 'Mixed.'

Fans Lash Out!

Additionally, the game faced removal from Steam in over 150 countries where PSN services are unavailable, prompting Valve to issue refunds to affected players. Arrowhead Game Studios, understanding the gravity of the situation, actively sought a resolution with Sony.

Johan Pilstedt, CEO of Arrowhead, expressed on X, "We are talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries. Your voice has been heard, and I am doing everything I can to speak for the community - but I don't have the final say." This dialogue underscores the developer's commitment to addressing the concerns of their global player base.

The initial requirement had threatened to overshadow the success Helldivers 2 has enjoyed since its launch. Released on PS5 and PC in February, the game received widespread praise from critics and players alike, quickly rising to prominence on Steam. Despite facing technical difficulties, regular updates, bug fixes, and new content releases have helped maintain a strong player base.

Major Victory for Fans

On Monday, Pilstedt expressed gratitude toward the community and PlayStation for their swift action in revising the decision. He highlighted the community's resilience and collaboration, thanking PlayStation for keeping PSN linking optional and quickly addressing community concerns.

This move by Sony and Arrowhead Game Studios demonstrates their willingness to listen to player feedback and adjust policies, accordingly, aiming to preserve the positive reception and strong community support Helldivers 2 has built since its release.
