Xbox Disc-to-Digital Feature Rolls Out to All Players: Here's How It Works
Xbox has started rolling out its disc-to-digital licensing feature to all players, allowing users to convert eligible physical game discs into digital licenses. The feature, which was previously available to Xbox Insiders, is now rolling out widely from September 30 through a system update.
The program is designed to give players greater flexibility with their existing physical game collections while retaining ownership of the original discs.

Xbox Disc-to-Digital: How It Works
The feature supports most Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical game discs. Once an eligible disc is inserted into a compatible console, players can claim a digital license for the game while signed into their Xbox account.
After claiming the license, users can download and play the digital version without needing to keep the physical disc inserted in the console.
Importantly, the original disc continues to work as before. Players can share, lend or resell the physical disc after claiming its digital license.
Depending on the game, the digital license can also provide access to features such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. This can allow supported titles to be played across devices through the Xbox app and on the Xbox Series S, which does not have a disc drive.
Not Every Xbox Game Disc Is Eligible
Xbox has confirmed that the program initially supports thousands of games, although not every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc is eligible. The list of supported titles may expand over time.
Eligibility can vary based on factors including technical requirements, licensing agreements, publishers and manufacturing considerations. Microsoft also notes that eligibility may change over time.
How to Access Disc-to-Digital Games
To claim a digital license, insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into the console and start playing while signed into your Xbox account. A confirmation notification will appear when the digital license has been granted.
Players can find their claimed games by going to:
Xbox button > My Games & apps > See all > Full library > All games
Games claimed through the program will carry a disc-to-digital licensing badge.
For supported Xbox Play Anywhere titles, the badge will also appear in the Xbox app under My Library, allowing users to install and play those games on a compatible PC.
Xbox first announced the disc-to-digital program in August, with the feature beginning its rollout to Xbox Insiders on August 31. The wider launch comes as the gaming industry continues to shift towards digital distribution while discussions around physical game ownership and game preservation gain momentum.
