While Microsoft is still figuring out to make its games division profitable, on the other hand, Japanese giant Sony has been quite successful in creating history with its PlayStation 4 home console.

Sony recently announced that the company has sold an astonishing 22.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide, since the console went on sale in November 2013. Buoyed by the success of its PlayStation 4, Sony now expects to sell another 16 million units before 31st March 2016.

Sony specifically noted that the strong overall performance for its PlayStation division was also due to a "significant" increase in network revenue, as well as robust game software sales.

However, its portable console division, which includes the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV, continued to perform poorly. Sales fell to 3.3 million units for the financial year, down from 4.1 million in year-ago quarter. Interestingly, the PlayStation 3 is also performing badly, according to Sony.

The PlayStation 4 is undoubtedly a grand success. Meanwhile, Microsoft still hasn't released any recent sales figures for the Xbox One, suggesting the console isn't doing all that well.
