Mark Pincus, CEO of Zynga had announced the cost-reduction plan of the company back in November which included the shutting down of games or halting the acceptance of new members into games.
Around 11 games came in the category with the latest game to be shut of being PetVille. The resources thus saved would be allocated towards more successful titles of the game developer and also into the creation of new games. The shutdown of these games will also be accompanied by lay-offs as part of the recovery plan of Zynga.
Zynga's share price had decreased considerably over the last year with its reducing to $2.33 from an IPO price of $10, which is a 3.52 percent reduction. The cost-cutting measures were announced by the company in order to get it back on track again.
These measures include lay-off of more than 100 employees, halting renewal of deals with contractors, closing offices, reducing investment in The Ville and also shut down of 13 games.
Eleven of these games have already come under the line of fire. PetVille, Mafia Wars 2 , FishVille, Vampire Wars , and Montopia have already been shut down. PetVille had been shut down on December 30.
Mafia Wars Shakedown, Forestville, Mojitomo and Word Scramble Challenge have been removed from the app stores. Indiana Jones Adventure World has become closed to new entrees and is scheduled for shutting down on January 14.
In order to pacify some of the bereaved players, Zynga is offering packs of virtual goods as free bonus.
Even though this seems pretty harsh on Zynga, the company still has more than 30 titles across a number of sites including Facebook, MySpace, Zynga.com, Android, iOS etc.
