Dolby Vision 2 Launched with AI and ‘Authentic Motion’ for the Next Era of HDR

Dolby Vision 2, the latest iteration of the HDR format, has been introduced over a decade after the original Dolby Vision. This new version aims to enhance more than just tone and brightness levels across scenes. It incorporates "Content Intelligence" tools powered by AI, which automatically adjust your TV settings based on content, location, and device, building on Dolby Vision IQ features.

The updated version includes Precision Black technology to improve clarity in dark scenes while maintaining the filmmaker's vision. Additionally, the Light Sense feature has been refined to adjust picture quality using ambient light detection alongside reference lighting data from the source material. These enhancements aim to provide a more immersive viewing experience.

Enhanced Features and Capabilities

Dolby Vision 2 introduces bi-directional tone mapping capabilities. This allows high-performance TVs to deliver enhanced brightness, sharper contrast, and richer colors. Content creators gain more control over display capabilities, ensuring a superior visual experience for viewers.

Motion smoothing, often criticized for creating an unnatural "soap opera" effect, is addressed with Dolby Vision 2's "Authentic Motion." This tool offers creative-driven motion control on a shot-by-shot basis, reducing unwanted judder while preserving a cinematic look. The effectiveness of this feature remains to be seen in practical applications.

Adoption and Compatibility

Hisense will be the first brand to release TVs equipped with Dolby Vision 2, utilizing a MediaTek Pentonic 800 chip. Currently, nearly 350 TVs from brands like LG, TCL, Sony, Vizio, and Roku support the existing Dolby Vision format. It is anticipated that more manufacturers will adopt this new version soon.

According to Cairon Armstrong from Dolby, content created for Dolby Vision will remain compatible with all TVs supporting either specification. However, only displays capable of Dolby Vision 2 will recognize and utilize additional metadata when available.

Tiers and Market Differentiation

The new specification introduces two tiers: Dolby Vision 2 Max for premium features on top-performing TVs and a standard label for mainstream models offering improved picture quality. This differentiation helps consumers identify which TVs offer full capabilities of the new format.
