Google Introduces Compose for TV And Android TV Design To Simplify And Improve Smart TV App Development
Streaming services have been growing exponentially. However, there's a lot of visual mismatch in the apps meant for portable devices, and large-screen Android TVs. To address this shortcoming, Google is offering "Compose for TV" and "Android TV Design Guidelines".
Multiple directions and methodologies have been adopted by streaming service providers for apps on Android TVs. This has created a lot of fragmentation in User Interface and User Experience. Google is hoping to streamline, simplify, and accelerate the creation of visually stunning and user-friendly TV applications.

Compose For TV Launched And Android TV Design Guidelines Released
Google's Android TV OS has seen exponential growth in the past few years. It has over 150 million monthly active devices, and according to a report, topped the list of the most shipped streaming TV platform globally in 2022.
Google's TV operating system has a surprisingly low number of purpose-built apps, especially when compared to the mobile version of Android. Moreover, the apps that do exist and are made with the living room in mind, seem to lack a unified User Interface and User Experience.
In its developer keynote at the Google I/O 2023, Google announced a new "Compose for TV" development toolkit. The company claims this should make it a lot easier to create apps with beautiful, TV-centric UIs.
The new utility brings the advantages of Jetpack Compose to the world of TV app development. In other words, the new UI framework builds off Google's Jetpack Compose tool with dedicated Material Design 3 components for what Google calls the "10ft UI."
Developers need to merely call on Compose for TV during the development process and the framework will lay all the UI groundwork. According to Google, developers just have to "Describe their UI, and Compose takes care of the rest."
Compose for TV is compatible with existing Android TV app code and the tool has now been integrated into Android Studio. This will allow developers to "Do more with less code" and streamline the app creation process by offloading most of the UI work, assured Google.
Google also announced its TV Design Guidelines for Android TV. The guidelines are intended to help developers create high-quality User Interfaces by offering simple-to-follow advice on elements such as navigation, layout, colors, and typography.
Combining this with the new Compose for TV tool, end-users should start seeing apps that look and feel like they were purpose-built for Android TV. These developments are proof that Google intends to firmly establish its presence in the Smart TV market.
