Jio Home TV service likely to offer HD channels at Rs. 400 per month
Reliance Jio appears to be all set to launch a new service based on the eMBMS technology.
After creating a buzz in the telecom industry, it looks like Reliance Jio is focusing on the television and broadband sectors. The company is rumored to be working on DTH and IPTV services. However, there is no official confirmation from Reliance Jio regarding these services and their launch date. If the latest rumors are to be believed, the company seems to be working on another service called Jio Home TV.
As per TelecomTalk, the Jio Home TV will reportedly bring in a change in the DTH segment in the country. The report states that the Jio Home TV will arrive in both SD (Standard Definition) and HD (High Definition). The SD channels will be available at a monthly price of Rs. 200. And, the HD channels will be available for a monthly price of Rs. 400.
This new service from Reliance Jio is said to be based on the eMBMS (Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) technology from the company. The report claims that this is not the Jio DTH service in the talks.
The report further reveals that Reliance Jio is in plans to launch this service soon. It is believed to be a modified version of the Jio Broadcast app, which is meant for streaming HD content on select devices. Notably, this app is under testing for now. The speculated Jio Home TV service might be rolled out to all the Jio users. Though the report reveals about this upcoming service, we need to take this information with a grain of salt as we have not received any official confirmation from Reliance Jio as yet.
eMBMS technology
eMBMS is a hybrid technology, which combines the capabilities of both radio architecture and TV channel to create a scalable solution to offer HD content in high volumes. What's more interesting is that this service will not need an active internet connection to access the content as most of it will be available in the broadcast mode for offline access. The third quarter report of Reliance Industries confirms this technology as it specified that eMBMS is under testing all over India.
Given the benefits of the eMBMS technology and the cost of the connection per month, we believe that the Jio Home TV service, which is being rumored to be a beneficial one. If this service turns out to be true, then the other DTH players in the country would definitely face a difficult time.
