JioHotstar Streaming Platform Launched: Merging JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar With Plans Starting at ₹149

The Indian streaming landscape just got a major shake-up. JioStar, the joint venture formed by Viacom18 and Star India after their high-profile merger, has officially launched JioHotstar-a new platform that combines JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. This means one thing for users: more content under one roof.

With nearly 300,000 hours of content and a user base exceeding 500 million, JioHotstar is positioning itself as India's go-to streaming service. But what does this actually mean for subscribers, and how does it change the OTT game?

A Streaming Powerhouse With Global and Local Hits

JioHotstar isn't just about bringing together what already existed on JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The new platform is now home to a lineup of content from Disney, NBCUniversal Peacock, Warner Bros., Discovery HBO, and Paramount-something that few streaming services globally offer in one place.

This means that viewers get access to major international titles alongside a robust catalog of Indian films, TV shows, documentaries, anime, and live sporting events. The company has also confirmed that the platform will support 10 Indian languages, catering to diverse regional audiences.

New Logo, New Plans, and a Free Tier

Along with the content merger, JioHotstar is introducing a fresh look with a new logo, featuring an asymmetrical seven-pointed star.

The platform will be free to access for now, meaning users can stream movies, shows, and live sports without a subscription. However, details on whether certain content will remain behind a paywall are still unclear. For those who prefer an uninterrupted experience with higher resolution streaming, JioHotstar has announced paid subscription plans, including:

• Mobile Plan - ₹149 for 3 months / ₹499 per year (Ad-supported, HD streaming on one mobile device)

• Super Plan - ₹299 for 3 months / ₹899 per year (Ad-supported, Full HD streaming on two devices)

• Premium Plan - ₹299 per month (Web-only) / ₹499 for 3 months / ₹1,499 per year (Ad-free except for live events, 4K streaming on up to four devices)

What Happens to Existing JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar Users?

If you already had a JioCinema subscription, you're automatically getting a JioHotstar Premium subscription for the same period as your existing plan. However, JioCinema subscriptions will not be renewed moving forward.

For users who had both JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions, your JioHotstar Premium access will match the duration of your JioCinema plan, while your Disney+ Hotstar subscription remains unchanged.

Spotlight on Digital Creators With 'Sparks'

Beyond just movies and shows, JioHotstar is also launching 'Sparks', a flagship initiative that aims to spotlight India's top digital creators.
