Netflix Sign-Ups Surge in US Post Password-Sharing Crackdown
According to data from research firm Antenna, the number of daily Netflix sign-ups in the US increased significantly in the days following the implementation of the streaming giant's crackdown on password-sharing, which began on May 23. This news caused the company's shares to rise by 2.3 percent to $418.92 (approximately ₹35,000) during early trading.
The Motivation behind Netflix's Decision
In today's saturated streaming market, where competition is fierce and the economy presents its own challenges, Netflix is constantly seeking new sources of revenue. With over 100 million households estimated to have shared their login information outside of their homes, Netflix recognized the need to address this widespread practice.

By allowing users to share accounts with individuals not living in the same household, the company was missing out on potential revenue streams. In a market where user acquisition is vital, Netflix needed to strike a balance between user convenience and profitability.
Netflix's New Rules and Pricing
To curb password-sharing and generate additional revenue, Netflix introduced new rules regarding account access. US users can now add a member from outside their households for an additional monthly fee of $8 (approximately ₹650). This pricing adjustment aims to encourage users to subscribe to their own accounts rather than relying on shared credentials.
Increase in Daily Sign-ups
The implementation of the password-sharing crackdown yielded favorable results for Netflix. Antenna, a research firm specializing in tracking user behavior, reported a surge in daily sign-ups.
On both May 26 and May 27, Netflix experienced nearly 100,000 new daily sign-ups in the US alone. This growth surpassed the levels observed during the initial COVID-19 lockdowns in March and April 2020, indicating the significant impact of the crackdown.
Expansion of Crackdown to Other Countries
While Netflix's initial crackdown targeted the US market, the company has expanded its efforts to more than 100 other countries. However, at the time of writing, Netflix has not responded to media inquiries regarding the rationale and extent of this expansion. It remains to be seen how international users will respond to these changes and whether they will have a similar impact on user acquisition.
