ChatGPT on WhatsApp to Stop Working From January 15, 2026 — Here’s How to Back Up Your Chats
If you’re one of the many people who chat with ChatGPT through WhatsApp for quick answers, reminders, or help with writing, that’s about to change. Starting January 15, 2026, WhatsApp will no longer allow ChatGPT or any other general-purpose AI chatbot to operate on its platform.

This change comes after Meta’s update to the WhatsApp Business API, which limits AI tools on the app to only customer service and business-related assistants. In simple terms, you’ll still see AI bots that help with orders or support requests — but not ones that function like ChatGPT.
So what happens to your existing conversations? They won’t automatically carry over. Unless you take a few steps before the cutoff, your entire chat history with ChatGPT on WhatsApp will disappear.
What You Should Do Now
If you’ve been using ChatGPT on WhatsApp and want to keep your messages, you’ll need to link your WhatsApp number to your ChatGPT account before January 15. Once you do that, your old conversations will automatically show up in your ChatGPT app or web history.
Here’s a quick rundown of how to save your data:
- Open the ChatGPT app or head to chat.openai.com.
- Log in (or sign up if you don’t already have an account).
- Go to ChatGPT’s WhatsApp profile — it’s listed as 1-800-ChatGPT.
- Send the message: “Link my WhatsApp with ChatGPT.”
- Follow the on-screen prompts that appear.
After you’ve done this once, your chat history should sync automatically. When WhatsApp’s access shuts down, you’ll still find all your past conversations safely stored in ChatGPT.
If you don’t link your number before the deadline, your messages with ChatGPT on WhatsApp will be deleted permanently.
Why Meta Is Pulling the Plug
Meta hasn’t said much beyond policy language, but the move seems to be about keeping tighter control over third-party AI tools. The company has been steadily building its own Meta AI assistant inside WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, and allowing rival systems like ChatGPT to operate freely might have created overlap or competition within its ecosystem.
There’s also the infrastructure side — running AI assistants through WhatsApp’s servers can add technical strain. So from January, WhatsApp will only support AI models that follow its own approved guidelines.
For OpenAI, this isn’t a permanent shutdown — it’s just a platform limitation. ChatGPT itself isn’t going anywhere, and the app, website, and voice access will all continue to function normally.
What Happens After January 2026
Once the policy kicks in, ChatGPT won’t reply to messages or commands sent via WhatsApp. You’ll have to use the official ChatGPT app, website, or desktop interface to talk to it.
The same account will still work everywhere else — the only thing that changes is how you access it. For users who rely heavily on WhatsApp for quick chats, it’ll take some getting used to. But OpenAI says it’s working to make the transition as seamless as possible.
