eSIM Scam in India: I4C Explains How to Stay Safe

The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, has raised concerns about a new digital scam involving fake eSIM activation. This fraud targets users across India, exploiting their phone numbers to intercept bank OTPs.

In one alarming case, a victim had deactivated ATM and UPI features, yet scammers managed to steal Rs. 4 lakhs from their account. The criminals hijack phone numbers to access these crucial OTPs sent by banks.

eSIM Scam Tactics

Scammers initiate contact by calling victims and sending an eSIM activation link. Clicking this link automatically converts the physical SIM into an eSIM, causing victims to lose message access. Consequently, the physical SIM becomes inactive, cutting off network signals on the user's device.

All communications, including OTPs, are redirected to the eSIM controlled by scammers. This allows them to send bank transaction requests and receive authorisation codes meant for the victim's registered number.

Preventive Measures Against Fraud

I4C advises caution against unknown callers and suspicious links. Users should independently request eSIM conversions rather than relying on unverified sources. If network signals drop unexpectedly, it's crucial to alert banks and telecom providers immediately.

These safety tips aim to protect individuals from falling prey to this sophisticated scam. By staying vigilant and informed, users can safeguard their financial information from cybercriminals.
