How to Make UPI Payments Without Internet: A Step-by-Step Guide
Nowadays, online payments have become an integral part of our daily lives. Whether it's a small grocery bill or any other transaction, most of us now rely on UPI for fast and seamless payments. However, there are times when your internet connection fails due to poor network coverage or a sudden outage, leaving you unable to complete your transaction just when you need it the most.
For this, NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has introduced UPI Lite X, a feature that allows users to make payments without an internet connection. This can be a game-changer, especially in remote areas or during emergencies where internet access is limited or unavailable. In this article, we'll walk you through everything you need to know about UPI Lite X - what it is, how it works, and how you can use it to make instant payments even when you're offline.

What Is UPI Lite X?
UPI Lite X is an enhanced version of UPI Lite, designed specifically to enable offline payments, even when there's no internet connectivity. This is made possible through Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which allows two devices to communicate wirelessly over short distances. With UPI Lite X, users can simply tap their phones to make payments, making it especially useful in areas with poor or no internet access.
It's important to note that only devices equipped with NFC support can use UPI Lite X. If your smartphone supports NFC and has UPI Lite enabled, you can start using Lite X without needing a separate wallet; both UPI Lite and Lite X share the same balance and infrastructure. The primary difference is that UPI Lite X adds the ability to transact offline, while UPI Lite requires an internet connection.
However, for a successful offline transaction, both the sender (payer) and the receiver (payee) must have UPI Lite X enabled on their devices. This ensures that the payment can be processed seamlessly through NFC. Now, let's look at how to enable it on your phone and start making offline payments.
How to Enable UPI Lite X?
Step 1: First, check if your smartphone supports NFC (Near Field Communication). For that, go to Settings, search for NFC and turn it on if available.
Step 2: Open your UPI app and go to the UPI Lite section. Activate it if you haven't done it yet. You may need to add some initial balance (usually up to Rs 2,000) from your bank account.
Step 3: In the same section, look for the UPI Lite X option. If your phone and app support it, you'll see an option to enable NFC-based offline payments.
Step 4: Give the necessary permissions for NFC and offline access if prompted. On Android, go to Settings > Connected devices > NFC > Contactless payments, and select your UPI app as the default.
It's also worth noting that UPI Lite X has a per-transaction limit of Rs 500 and a daily limit of Rs 2,000. As noted, both the sender and receiver must have UPI Lite X enabled for a successful offline transaction. It only works for person-to-person and merchant payments where NFC is available. Now, check how to make the payment -
How to Make UPI Payments Without Internet?
Step 1: Open your UPI app and go to the Lite X or Offline Payments section.
Step 2: Bring your phone close to the recipient's NFC-enabled device
and choose the amount you want to pay from your UPI Lite balance.
Step 3: Once the receiver's device is detected via NFC, the app will prompt you to confirm the payment.
Step 4: Now, make the payment using your UPI PIN or app authentication.
Moreover, the amount is debited from the payer's UPI Lite X wallet and credited to the payee's UPI Lite X wallet during the offline transaction. However, both users must come online (i.e., connect to the internet) within 4 days of making the offline payment to allow proper transaction settlement and syncing with the bank servers.
