How to Enable Android’s Emergency Location Service in India for Emergency Calls
If you’ve ever had to call for help in a stressful moment, you know how hard it can be to explain where you are. Android is trying to solve that quietly in the background with something called Emergency Location Service, or ELS. And for the first time, it’s now live in India, starting with Uttar Pradesh.

Here’s how it works and how you can make sure it’s available on your phone when you need it.
What Android’s Emergency Location Service Actually Does
Emergency Location Service is built into Android. When you call or text an emergency number like 112, your phone automatically sends your precise location to emergency responders.
It doesn’t rely on just GPS. Android combines location data from GPS, Wi-Fi networks, and mobile towers to get a more accurate fix, often within about 50 metres. If the call drops or you’re unable to speak clearly, responders still receive your location.
The service is developed by Google and runs natively on Android, so there’s no extra app involved.
How to Check If ELS Is Enabled on Your Android Phone
You don’t need to download anything, but it’s worth checking that the settings are turned on.
Open Settings on your phone, go to Location, then tap Location Services. Look for Emergency Location Service and make sure it’s enabled. On most phones, this is already switched on by default.
Your phone also needs to be running Android 6.0 or newer, which covers the vast majority of active Android devices in India.
When ELS Activates and When It Doesn’t
ELS only turns on during an emergency call or emergency SMS. It stays off the rest of the time.
Your location isn’t stored or tracked continuously, and it isn’t visible to Google outside of an emergency situation. The data goes directly from your phone to emergency services.
In Uttar Pradesh, the service has been integrated with the state’s 112 emergency response system. During pilot testing, it helped identify locations for millions of emergency calls, including cases where calls disconnected within seconds.
