Instagram Now Lets You Reshare Public Stories Even Without A Tag: Here’s How To Do It

Instagram has rolled out a small but very handy update that changes how Stories move around the platform. You can now reshare any public Story to your own, even if the original creator didn’t tag you. If you’ve ever taken a screenshot just to share something that caught your eye, this new option will feel like a relief.

How To Repost Public Instagram Stories Straight To Your Own

What The New Feature Actually Allows

Until now, you could only repost a Story if the creator had tagged your account. If not, you’d have to screenshot it, crop it, and hope the quality didn’t fall apart. Instagram’s update removes that dependency. As long as the Story comes from a public account, you can share it directly.

The original creator still gets credit. Their username appears on your Story, and viewers can tap through to their profile.

How To Reshare A Public Story

Here’s the simple step-by-step process:

1. Open the Story you want to reshare

Just tap on the Story like you normally do.

2. Look for the Add to Story button

If the Story is public, you’ll see an Add to Story button next to the usual sharing options. That’s your cue.

3. Tap Add to Story

The Story will drop straight into your Story composer. You’ll notice that the quality stays intact since it isn’t a screenshot.

4. Edit it if you want to

You can add text, stickers, GIFs, or anything else you usually add. Your edit only affects your version. The creator’s original Story stays exactly as it is.

5. Share it

Tap Your Story or Share. The creator’s handle will appear on the post so credit is automatic.

What You Can’t Share

There are a few limits to keep in mind:

  • Stories from private accounts won’t have the Add to Story button
  • You can only reshare public Stories unless you already have permission to view and share them
  • If a public creator turns off Allow Sharing to Story in their privacy settings, you won’t be able to reshare their content

These controls make sure creators still have a say in how their Story travels.

How To Disable Story Resharing For Your Own Account

If you have a public profile and don’t want others resharing your Stories, here’s how to turn it off:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Open Privacy
  3. Select Story
  4. Toggle off Allow Sharing to Story

Once this is off, no one will see the Add to Story button on your content.

Is The Feature Live For Everyone?

Instagram says the update is rolling out on both Android and iOS. Some users may see it immediately, others may need to update the app or wait for their account to get the server-side switch.

Either way, the feature is rolling out worldwide and should reach everyone soon.
