How to Update Your Aadhaar Mobile Number Using UIDAI’s New Aadhaar App
For years, updating Aadhaar details has usually meant visiting an enrolment centre, carrying documents, and waiting in queues. That’s about to change.

From today, Aadhaar holders can update their registered mobile number using UIDAI’s new Aadhaar app, without visiting a centre, as long as they meet certain conditions.
UIDAI has confirmed the launch of the full Aadhaar app through its official X account, stating that users will be able to update their mobile numbers from anywhere, anytime.
Here’s a simple breakdown of how the process works and what you should know before using it.
What the New Aadhaar App Lets You Do
The biggest update is mobile number change through the app, but UIDAI says the app is designed as a broader digital Aadhaar solution.

With the app, users can:
- Update their registered mobile number
- Verify identity using a QR code
- Update basic details like name and address
- Verify another person’s Aadhaar securely
- Use digital verification instead of carrying a physical Aadhaar card
The idea is to reduce reliance on physical documents and make Aadhaar services more accessible through a guided and secure process.
Step-by-Step: How to Change Your Aadhaar Mobile Number
UIDAI has outlined a guided process inside the app. Here’s how it works.
Step 1: Sign in to the Aadhaar app
Download and install the new Aadhaar app on your device and sign in.
Step 2: Open the update section
Swipe up the pop-up at the bottom of the screen. Under the Services section, select My Aadhaar Update.
Step 3: Choose mobile number update
Tap Mobile Number Update and press Continue.
Step 4: Enter your new mobile number
Enter the new mobile number. Tap Send OTP, then enter the OTP received on the new number and tap Verify.
Step 5: Complete face verification
You’ll be redirected to the Face Verification screen. Tap Face Authenticate and proceed. Position your face within the circle, keep your phone steady, and blink when the circle turns green for verification.
Step 6: Complete the process
After successful verification, you’ll reach the payment page. Complete the payment to finish updating your mobile number.
What Happens If Your Old Mobile Number Is Inactive
If you don’t have access to the old registered mobile number, the update cannot be done through the app. In such cases, you must visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre to make the change.
According to UIDAI, this restriction is meant to prevent misuse and protect identity data.
Why the Process Has Two-Step Verification
UIDAI has clarified that the mobile number update feature follows a two-step verification process to prevent misuse.
First, an OTP is sent to the old registered mobile number. Second, the user must complete face verification using the app.
Only after both steps are completed will the system allow the new number to be linked to Aadhaar.
UIDAI says this rule ensures that only the genuine Aadhaar holder can make changes to identity details.
