IRCTC Now Allows Online Cancellation for Tickets Booked at Railway Stations—Here’s How It Works
Indian Railways, the largest transportation network in Asia, continues to improve passenger convenience with new digital initiatives. The latest update allows travelers to cancel tickets purchased at station reservation counters online, eliminating the need for immediate in-person cancellations.
While most passengers already book and cancel tickets through the IRCTC website and app, those who buy tickets at station counters now have an easier way to cancel their reservations without making an extra trip. However, some rules and procedures must be followed to complete the cancellation process and secure a refund.

How to Cancel a Counter Ticket Online
Passengers who booked their tickets at a railway station counter can now cancel them through the IRCTC website. Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Visit the IRCTC website and find the "Cancel Ticket" option on the homepage.
- Enter your PNR number, train number, and security captcha as printed on the ticket.
- An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number-enter this to proceed.
- Once verified, passenger details will be displayed. Click submit to finalize the cancellation.
Refund Process: Why You Still Need to Visit the Station
Although ticket cancellation can be done online, refunds for counter-booked tickets are not processed digitally. To get a refund, passengers must visit the nearest railway station reservation counter with proof of the online cancellation. The refund will be processed by railway officials upon verification.
Rules for Refund Eligibility
Indian Railways has set specific rules for refund eligibility based on ticket status and train departure time:
- Confirmed tickets: Must be submitted at the booking counter at least four hours before the train's departure to be eligible for a refund.
- Waiting list (WL) or RAC tickets: Can be canceled up to 30 minutes before departure for a refund.
As digital transformation continues, further improvements in ticketing and refund processes could be expected, enhancing the overall railway travel experience for millions of passengers.
