Microsoft's Windows offering has been one of the most prominent and well known desktop-based OSs ever know to man. Ever since the days of the first ever Windows back in 1985 (as a graphical operating system shell for MS-DOS), there has been no looking back for the company.

Every year, the Windows platform gets updated with a newer version, and this year it has been the Windows 8 that has come as the successor for the previous Windows 7. And if you are looking to upgrade your PC or laptop from version 7 to 8, here are the 5 easy steps.

Run Windows Update first before install the upgrade. Press Start -- All Programs. When the program list shows, find "Windows Update" and click to execute. Click "Check for updates" to download the necessary updates.

Once the verification step is done, install updates for your system. Some of the updates will require you to restart the computer. Keep updating your computer with the step above until no new important updates are available.

Remember that the upgrade option only works by Microsoft Windows 8 upgrade plan. Hence, confirm your current Microsoft Windows 7 version. Next, insert the Windows 8 Installation Disc in your DVD or BD reading device. Wait for the AutoPlay windows to pop up. Click "Run setup.exe" to continue.

Windows 8 Installation will now be prepared. But before the main installation, Windows will require you to type in the product Key. You should find your product key in your disc package. Check the "I accept the license terms" to continue. Here on, Choose what kind of upgrade you want and click "Next."

From there, Windows will check if your system is ready to upgrade and notice if any Microsoft program is not yet compatible with Windows 8. Here, just uninstall the program and follow instruction by Windows 8 setup. Now, according to the upgrade type you choose, Windows may (or may not) direct you to personalize setup. Then, once the Windows 8 desktop shows, your upgrade will be complete.
