Netflix Has Removed Casting for Most TVs: How You Can Still Watch on Your TV
If you’ve opened Netflix on your phone recently and wondered why the Cast button suddenly vanished, it isn’t a glitch. Netflix has quietly removed casting support from its mobile app for most modern smart TVs and streaming devices. Users across Reddit have been reporting the same experience, and Netflix’s own support page now confirms the change.

So before we get into how to still watch Netflix on your TV, let’s break down exactly what changed.
What Netflix Changed
Until recently, you could open Netflix on your phone, tap the Cast icon, and send whatever you were watching straight to your TV. Now that option is gone on most modern devices, including the Chromecast with Google TV, the Google TV Streamer, and many Google TV–powered smart TVs.
Who Can Still Cast
There are only two groups of people who can still cast Netflix from their phones:
- Users with older Chromecast devices or TVs with native Google Cast built in.
- Users on a non-ad-supported plan. If you’re on an ad-supported tier, casting won’t work at all, even on old hardware.
Everyone else will no longer see the Cast button inside the mobile app.
How to Watch Netflix on Your TV Now That Casting Is Gone
Even though the Cast button is gone for most users, you still have several reliable ways to stream Netflix on your TV. Here’s the simplest breakdown.
1. Use the Netflix App on Your Smart TV
This is the method Netflix wants you to use now.
Most modern TVs already come with Netflix installed. If not, you can download it from the TV’s app store.
Steps:
- Turn on your TV.
- Open the Netflix app from the home screen or app drawer.
- Sign in to your account.
- Use the TV remote to browse and stream.
The experience isn’t as fast as navigating through your phone, but it works on any supported TV.
2. Use Legacy Chromecast or Google Cast Devices
If you have an older Chromecast (the original puck-style models) or a TV that shipped with Google Cast built in, you may still be able to cast.
Requirements:
- Your Netflix plan must be ad-free.
- Your phone and Chromecast must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
Steps:
- Open Netflix on your phone.
- Look for the Cast icon.
- Select your old Chromecast or Google Cast-compatible TV.
- Play your show.
If your device doesn’t appear, that means Netflix no longer supports casting to it.
3. Use Screen Mirroring (Smart View, Miracast, or Similar)
If direct casting doesn’t work, you can still mirror your phone screen to your TV. This works outside of Netflix’s restrictions because you’re mirroring the entire display.
On Android:
- Open Quick Settings.
- Tap Smart View, Screen Cast, or Miracast depending on your phone.
- Select your TV.
- Approve the request on the TV.
This shows your phone screen on the TV, including Netflix playback. Just note that the phone must stay awake while playing.
4. Use a USB-C to HDMI Cable
If your phone supports video output, this method is simple and doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi.
Steps:
- Plug a USB-C to HDMI adapter into your phone.
- Connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to your TV.
- Switch the TV to the correct input.
- Open Netflix on your phone.
Whatever plays on your phone appears on the TV.
5. Use a Streaming Device or Game Console
If you have a Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox, Roku, or any Android TV box, you can install Netflix directly on it.
Steps:
- Open the device’s app store.
- Download Netflix.
- Sign in with your account.
- Use the device’s remote to browse and stream.
This bypasses casting entirely.
