Instagram DMs Now Have Voice Effects, and It’s Actually Fun to Use: Here’s How to Use It
Instagram has introduced a new feature that lets you add voice effects to your DM voice notes. It’s a simple addition, but it changes how voice messages feel in chats.

Instead of sending a plain recording, you can now tweak how your voice sounds before hitting send.
What This Feature Does
The feature lets you apply different voice effects to your voice notes while still keeping your original tone and expression intact.
So it doesn’t completely distort your voice. It just adds a different style to it.
The person on the other end can also see which effect you used and tap on it to try the same thing in their reply.
These are the effects currently available:
- Original
- Chipmunk
- Demon
- Alien
- Robot
- Underwater
- Stadium
- Wobble
- Fishbowl
How To Use Voice Effects in Instagram DMs

Using it is pretty straightforward:
- Open any DM chat on Instagram
- Tap on the voice message record button
- Look for the Voice Effects option in the composer
- Record your voice note as you normally would
- Tap on different effects to preview how your voice sounds
- Once you’re done, send the message
That’s it. The effect gets applied to the final voice note you send.
What Happens After You Send It
When your message is delivered, the recipient will see which effect you used.
They can listen to it and, if they want, tap on the same effect and use it in their reply. That’s where it gets a bit more interactive.
Why This Matters (A Little)
It’s not a huge change to DMs, but it does make voice notes a bit more fun to use.
If you already send a lot of voice messages, this just gives you another way to play around with them.
