Sent Money to the Wrong Person on Google Pay? Here’s How to Get It Back
Digital payments have made life easier, but mistakes can still happen. A simple typo in a UPI ID or selecting the wrong contact can mean your money ends up in someone else's account.
If you've ever transferred money to the wrong person on Google Pay, don't panic-there are ways to get it back. Here's what you need to know.

What to Do If You Sent Money to the Wrong UPI ID
Mistaken transactions are more common than you'd think. If you realize you've sent money to the wrong account, act fast. Here are your options:
1. Reach Out to the Recipient
The quickest solution is to contact the person who received the money. If it's someone you know, it's as simple as asking them to send it back. If it's a stranger, try reaching out politely and explaining the mistake. Some people may return the amount immediately.
2. Contact Google Pay Customer Support
If the recipient is unresponsive or refuses to refund the money, you can call Google Pay's customer service at 1800-419-0157. Have the following details ready:
- Transaction ID (found in your Google Pay history)
- Date and time of transfer
- Amount sent
- UPI ID of the recipient
They may be able to help you reverse the transaction, especially if the recipient is unresponsive.

3. File a Complaint with NPCI
If Google Pay support can't resolve the issue, the next step is to escalate the matter to NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). NPCI is responsible for managing UPI transactions, and they offer a formal dispute resolution process.
Here's how to file a complaint:
- Go to npci.org.in
- Click on "What We Do" and select UPI
- Look for the Dispute Redressal Mechanism
- Fill in details like UPI transaction ID, sender and receiver bank names, and the amount transferred
According to RBI guidelines, wrongly transferred funds should be refunded within 24 to 48 hours. If both accounts are with the same bank, the process is usually faster. If the transfer was between different banks, it may take longer.
How to Avoid Mistakes While Using Google Pay
Here are some simple steps to avoid transfer errors in the future:
- Double-check the recipient's UPI ID or phone number before sending money
- Use QR code payments instead of manually entering details whenever possible
- Regularly verify your UPI ID to comply with new NPCI guidelines
- Set up small test transfers when sending money to a new contact for the first time
Digital payments are fast and convenient, but mistakes happen. Knowing how to recover money from a wrong transaction can save you stress, and staying updated on UPI rule changes can help you avoid issues altogether.
