Your PAN Will Be Blocked After December 31! Here’s How to Link It To Your Aadhaar And Avoid It
Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) could soon become inactive if it isn't linked with your Aadhaar before December 31, 2025. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made this linkage mandatory under Notification No. 26/2025, issued in April this year.
This linkage is essential because PAN is required for a wide range of financial and legal activities - from filing income tax returns and opening bank accounts to applying for loans or making high-value transactions.

Consequences of an Inactive PAN
If your PAN becomes inactive after the deadline, it can lead to serious disruptions in your financial life. Here's what you won't be able to do:
- Open a new bank or demat account
- Invest in the stock market or start an SIP
- Make cash or fixed deposits exceeding ₹50,000
- Apply for loans, buy or sell property, or register vehicles
- Conduct foreign currency transactions above ₹50,000
- Access government schemes or complete business registrations
Essentially, your financial identity will be frozen, and all major credit or banking activities will halt until your PAN is reactivated.
How to Link PAN with Aadhaar Online
The linking process is simple and can be completed within minutes. Follow this Step-by-Step Guide:
- Visit the official Income Tax e-filing portal
https://www.incometax.gov.in - Find and click on the 'Link Aadhaar' option on the homepage.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers in the designated fields.
- Click 'Validate' to check if your PAN and Aadhaar are already linked.
- If not linked, enter your registered mobile number to receive an OTP.
- Submit the OTP for verification.
- You'll receive an on-screen confirmation message once the linking is successful.
The Role of the CBDT
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), operating under the Ministry of Finance's Department of Revenue, is responsible for drafting and implementing India's direct tax policies. The Income Tax Department, functioning under the CBDT, ensures tax compliance and oversees PAN-Aadhaar integration.
Failing to link your PAN with Aadhaar before December 31 will render your PAN inactive, restricting access to essential financial and legal services until the linkage is completed.
